Rather similar to primitive tribesmen who bluster in the face of an enemy, to try and intimidate their enemy on the one hand and to gin up courage on the other.

The Sioux did that at the Wagon Box Fight in 1867 when they assaulted a detachment of soldiers and civilians cutting timber and hay. The Sioux were welcomed by a hail of gunfire from repeating rifles, which they had not expected.

Something similar happened in 1879 in the Transvaal at Rorke’s Drift in a fight between thousands of Zulu warriors and a detachment of British soldiers and engineers. The Zulus were pummeled.

I guess it’s just normalcy bias but no one wants to
acknowledge that world war III. has already started.
