Obama claimed Wallenberg was his personal hero. The Nytimes bought the Russian claim he died in 1947. Seems that closing the case was rather important to the administration, more important than say, the Levinson case with Iran or Russian drug smugglers.
In addition to the Wallenberg case beimy an issue of concern during the Obama admin, strangely enough, it was an issue of concern to future SCOTUS justice John Roberts way back in the 80s. A lot of people wanted to close the case in a way that would let the “new” Russia save face for the disappearance of a holocaust hero.
