> It’s as if he’s talking about the present day.

It’s an inherent problem with government. It’s intrinsic. There will always be someone who imagines that power in the hands of the “right people” is automatically beneficial, yet historic counter-examples are so common that we have expressions for it: “Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely,” or “the road to hell is paved with good intentions,” or “for every problem in human affairs, there is always a solution - simple, neat, and wrong.”

A reasonable heuristic to follow is to maintain skepticism towards any proposal to expand government in order to solve a problem, no matter how wonderful it may seem. People who ridicule those skeptics should be considered would-be tyrants, no matter wonderful they imagine themselves.

I have developed a different and much more cynical view of this.

Those people saying they need power to make things better? They are *LYING*. They want more power to enrich themselves and their allies. It's about funneling money from the slaves into the pockets of the connected.

They really have no interest in making things better, that's just public relations, their real interests lie in controlling the gravy train.

They are parasites, not misguided altruists.
