This is another example of why government should not be running the economy. Socialism doesn’t work in a democracy.

Quick glance at this does raise a legitimate question, why are they not using or recycling that brine? Dumping it back into the ocean, will create some level of pollution or concentration. It is wasteful anyway.

They would have shut them down like the nuclear power plants

I used to wonder how much gold there was in the brine...

Southern California will die from drought this summer as the natural climate condition of desert resumes.
The relatively wet last hundred years are climate anomaly

The real reason is because no one wanted to see the ugly plant from their backyard swimming pool deck. THIS is how they really think...

The Coastal Commission and the Calif Air Resources Board (CARB) have almost single handed crippled the state beyond repair.
Bought anything lately that did not have that Calif Prop 65 warning on it? Hell, stuff sold in Bangladesh likely has those Calif warnings on labels.

California should fund research into figuring out how non-binary residents could use salt water and consume all of the by-product, such as brine. That way, none of the salty parts of salt water would be returned to the ocean. And the non-binarys could have another way to virtue-signal their non-binaryness to the world.
Until the salt water oceans run out of salty parts. then the next generation of non-binarys could have a new problem to solve. Circle of Liberal Life, Simba.

Same stupid reasoning that killed gold dredging in California!
Water, sand and gravel in river bottom is sucked up by dredge, water sand and gravel is returned to river, minus heavy metals (including polluting mercury) which are kept in dredge!
Some really STUPID PEOPLE IN CHARGE IN CALIFORNIA!!!!

A California coastal panel on Thursday rejected a long-standing proposal to build a $1.4 billion seawater desalination plant to turn Pacific Ocean water into drinking water as the state grapples with persistent drought that is expected to worsen in coming years with climate change.
They're waiting until it costs a trillion...
