*When dealing with individuals, I have found usually when someone is overly proud, excessively prone to bragging, that means they are covering up something that shames them in a profound and disabling manner. The Quebecers are very insecure about something that does not change.

I agree that is the key issue.
They want to be independent but are unwilling to make the sacrifices necessary to be independent.
