Oryx also documents Ukrainian losses.

Yep, it also reports a great deal of them as Russian losses.

The first time I checked it the first entry for “Russian tank” was a Ukrainian T-64.
Then a lot of random wrecks where you can’t really get what they are belonging to.

The war against Ukraine and the economic fundamentals are moving against Russia and Putin with an accumulating toll. Putin’s death or removal would provide the occasion for new leadership to reevaluate and change policy so as to move toward a cease fire and peace settlement and the end of sanctions. Obviously, details matter, and the worse Russia’s war is going and the worse her economy is, the more likely is a post-Putin Russia to make the necessary concessions.

Supposedly, Oryx uses context and time stamps and geolocation data embedded in the social media photos to help identify whose wrecked vehicle it is. For example, a photo of a wrecked tank might be impossible to identify definitively from markings as Russian or Ukrainian, but if it is of a subtype Russia alone uses and is in the middle of a column of wrecked Russian tanks and taken at the same time as photos of them, it can be safely assumed that the tank is Russian.

Actually, Putin’s errors and Russia’s military incompetence and losses in Ukraine are now beginning to be acknowledged in the Russian media and by Russia’s advocates who are more or less safely abroad. I surmise that soon Russian propaganda will shift from denying how badly things are going to whining that the US and NATO set Putin up and are now piling on to do as much harm as possible.

Good luck trying to find at least 70 tanks of the unique Russian sub-type there.
As for the Russian military incompetence, the US wasn’t in conflict of such proportions since the end of WWII. In WWII the US suffered like 100 times the losses the Russians suffered in Ukraine.
That brings some perspective.

Read the Oryx website for an explanation of how they identify and classify tanks and other armored vehicles.

Official Russian media reports indicate that about 200,000 troops are deployed in the invasion of Ukraine, which you suggest is far larger than US military efforts after WW II. Not so.

After WW II, the US fought in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq (twice), and Afghanistan, along with numerous other smaller conflicts. Official US government figures are as follows:

Korean War (1950-1953) Total U.S. Servicemembers In Theater, 1,789,000, with Battle Deaths of 33,739.

Vietnam War (1964-1975) Total U.S. Servicemembers Deployed to Southeast Asia 3,403,000, with Battle Deaths of 47,434.

Desert Shield/Desert Storm, also known as the First Persian Gulf War (1990-1991) Total U.S. Servicemembers Deployed to Gulf 694,550, with Battle Deaths of 148.

I have not easily found comparable figures for the Second Persian Gulf War or Afghanistan, but I think that I have adequately refuted your claim and need not belabor the issue.

To return to the larger point, Russia is faltering badly in its invasion of Ukraine, in what would be roughly equivalent to the US invading and occupying Canada.

Of course, unlike Russia's thuggish and imperialistic attitude toward Ukraine, the US and Canada enjoy excellent relations and genuine friendship at all levels. When the US and Canada go to war nowadays, it is as close and inseparable allies.

Ukraine has more armor and air defenses than most of the European countries together and a standing army larger than the opposing force. Your comparison with the Iraq war is laughable.

The oryx explanation is one thing, the reality is another.

I generally don’t argue your idea. Russia is a paper tiger, so disband NATO and disarm.:)

If the Ukrainian military is so large and potent, why was Russia so foolish as to invade in the expectation of a quick victory?

If it is large and potent compared to Iraqi or European militaries it doesn’t mean the Russian military can’t defeat it. Why has been told when it took place.

With the backing of the US and NATO, Ukraine has the financial and logistical wherewithal to fight indefinitely. And the Russian military is proving to be a poor match against modern Western smart weapons. Over time, Ukraine will become increasingly well-equipped and will gradually recover territory now held by Russian troops.

Meanwhile, economic sanctions on Russia are diminishing her capacity to sustain her military and are dramatically weakening her economy. Internal Russian projections are for a twelve per cent contraction in the Russian economy.

At some point, even Putin loyalists will have to wonder just what objectives Russia is fighting for and are they worth the cost. Propaganda about Ukraine being an easy push over infested with Nazis and drug addicts has worn thin.

You are still pondering the same line, peddled by the media propaganda. Too bad, it is wearing thin for the Ukrainians.
For the economy, don’t make me laugh. How much is your gas right now? In Russia it is 46 rubles per liter. Used to be 48 half a year ago.
