This is like the Bird and Swine flu. i.e. I ignored them and they just sort of went away. I expected that to happen with covid, but our nanny state got involved in our private lives, and the rest is history.

That better not be the new normal.

Spain has person to person spreading already. The canaries are a favorite holiday spot for Spaniards. This bug is already airborne the CDC and WHO are doing their best to tamp down that fact but as more and more not directly connected people to the original cases in the UK spring up they will have to acknowledge community spread and airborne vectors. Fortunately it looks like this is the West African clade with a 1% CFR not the Congo clade with 10 to 15% small victory.

Is a desire for bananas a symptom?

Interesting thing about monkeypox from the CDC:

“In Africa, monkeypox has been shown to cause death in as many as 1 in 10 persons who contract the disease.”

I’m guessing that in Africa, a lot of things that are considered a mild sickness in the western world, actually kills people there. Had they had 21st century western medicine, how many men would have actually died in the Civil War?

“That better not be the new normal.”

I think it is. Too many fellow citizens are incapable of doing anything other than what the government tells them. I am still a bit mystified at the residual covid panic. They’re still isolating, masking, and threatening people over a bad cold.

The good news is that this is not as serious as smallpox.

This stuff does not transmit easily.

If you are not bathing in another person’s fluids, or literally “sucking face” the chances of transmission are pretty low.

This actually sounds like an HIV or Aids transmission path.

I think most of us are going to be OK on this one.

“ I am still a bit mystified at the residual covid panic. ”

It has shown me that a great many people in this country, perhaps worldwide, live in absolute fear of the world. It is sad.

Good point, and I absolutely agree. What explains the amazing death rate in NY in the beginning? I think it was the treatment.

They probably needed more leeches...

Transmission of monkeypox virus occurs when a person comes into contact with the virus from an animal, human, or materials contaminated with the virus. The virus enters the body through broken skin (even if not visible), respiratory tract, or the mucous membranes (eyes, nose, or mouth). Animal-to-human transmission may occur by bite or scratch, bush meat preparation, direct contact with body fluids or lesion material, or indirect contact with lesion material, such as through contaminated bedding. Human-to-human transmission is thought to occur primarily through large respiratory droplets. Respiratory droplets generally cannot travel more than a few feet, so prolonged face-to-face contact is required. Other human-to-human methods of transmission include direct contact with body fluids or lesion material, and indirect contact with lesion material, such as through contaminated clothing or linens.

Diseases attack the weak.

In the case of Covid it was the elderly, the obese, and the overall “sickly” folks.

In the grand scheme of things, healthy people did not usually succumb to the disease. Of course there are exceptions—but this has been the case since the beginning of time.
