In most of the wars post 1945 the US has not dealt with opponents like the Russians. These other opponents were guerillas sheltering behind sympathetic or cowed civilians. The closest were the regular forces of Iraq, which used largely Soviet doctrines, as do the Russians, and the Iraqis were simply wiped away. The Russian system IS to depend on vast expenditure of ammunition from large numbers of artillery pieces. In Eastern European terrain these cannot be hidden, or perhaps such weapons can no longer be hidden anymore anyway.
Based on current videos, of which there is lots, mainly of Ukrainian guns firing counterbattery vs Russian artillery, Russian guns and launchers are placed and used the same old way, and, with their logistics, are sitting ducks to the vast range of weapons the USAF can bring to bear.
“In Eastern European terrain these cannot be hidden...”
Yes, there is a vast difference between the canyons, hills, and mountains of Korea, or the dense jungles of Vietnam, and the Eurasian steppe, which is probably the biggest flat and open battlefield on the face of the earth. The only place you can hide there are in the cities, or in the trees, and there aren’t that many trees.
Who is rolling up whose positions? No one is suggesting that the Ukrainians are doing anything other than sustaining devastating losses - but there is a lot of propaganda.
And yet we still got our tails beat and left. You cannot control territory with an airplane loaded up with a couple of precision strike weapons. Even a B-52 full of JDAMS creates chaos, but at the end of the day controls nothing.
