Gates dalliance with the enemy goes all the way back to December 1987 when he met with CIA counterpart Vladimir Kryuchkov, to work out a solution to get the Soviet Union to depart Afghanistan gracefully. Gates was wrong then (and often wrong since) when he argued with SecState Shultz claiming that Russia would never leave Afghanistan. He made a bet with another Reagan heavyweight — who argued that the Soviets wouold be out of Afghaistan before Reagan left office. As usual, Gates lost.
