But celebrations of it took place in many places in the US, as people moved around and took the Texas tradition with them.

I suspect that might be sarcasm, but in case it is not: Juneteenth is very much not like Kwanza.

Many in the country had not heard of Juneteenth, because it was a specifically Texas holiday, to celebrate the freeing of slaves there. DC has similarly had Emancipation Day adjacent to April 15th.

The holiday itself is something to be celebrated, though mandating it as a national holiday is debatable.

I think it would be cool if all African American dentists were having free Juneteeth Celebrations and Checkups for their patients.

When I was growing up, it was called 'emancipation day'. I have no problem with that. What was the purpose of changing it to something from ebonics? Juneteenth?

That is true. After the Civil War there was a lot of migration of both whites and blacks because the south was so devastated. People desperately needed work.

President Lincoln signed the end to slavery for the date, January 1, 1863 ...

Jan 1 is the right date to celebrate ...

Did Walmart pull it because a) they had watermelon flavor, or b) they didn't have watermelon flavor?

No....tasted like fried chicken.

Well, then; if a POTUS proclaims something, does that make it the law of the land? No. Not at all.
In fact, 9 December, 1865 is when the 13th Amendment was ratified, properly and constitutionally prohibiting involuntary servitude/slavery in the United States.

I always take exception when presidents of the US act like they have some legislative powers; they only have executive powers, er, are supposed to.....

For all you know, they may have been serfs!! At one time, most Europeans were!!!!

But the bogus “juneteenth holiday” does not apply to them anyway!!!!

But it wasn’t enforced in Texas until later, with the arrival of enough Union troops.

When the slaves in Texas were actually freed, they celebrated.

One is early in the war, the other at the end. Emancipation Day is a totally different holiday from Juneteenth, having to do with the much earlier Emancipation Proclamation...of 1862. Juneteenth has to do with the freeing of slaves in Texas, 1865.

The proposed Juneteenth ice cream was a combination of red velvet and cheesecake flavors. Sounds great to me.
