Campus Lockdowns In Uvalde Are So Common, Some Students Didn’t Realize A School Shooting Was Actually Happening

VALDE, Texas — The school lockdowns across Uvalde, Texas, on Tuesday didn’t strike many students as anything odd. In this small border town, they’re common as suspects try to evade authorities in high speed chases.

“We just thought it was a normal Tuesday,” Victoria Phillips, a 17-year-old senior at Uvalde Classical Academy, told BuzzFeed News.

Of course, it wasn’t. The reason for the lockdowns quickly became clear: an 18-year-old gunman had entered Robb Elementary in Uvalde, where he ended up fatally shooting 19 students and two adults.

The town’s mayor, Don McLaughlin, told Fox News host Tucker Carlson just days before the mass shooting that President Joe Biden’s border policy had been causing armed car chases that force local schools to lock down about once per week.

But Felicity Fry, also a 17-year-old senior at Uvalde Classical Academy, estimated it’s probably closer to twice per week. She described it as “shelter in place,” where no one is allowed out of the building.

“I think, sadly, it’s become normal,” she said. “No one realizes the severity of the situation. Like, we’re having another lockdown, this is just so normal.”

Peyton Phillips, also 17, said she figured the lockdown on Tuesday was related to issues related to the border, which is about 130 miles away. “[It] is still scary, but you just become used to it,” she said.

“We’re numb to it pretty much,” sister Victoria Phillips added.

Peyton said she feels safe at school, but at home, it’s different. There are often high-speed police chases that go down her “little street,” while helicopters hover over.

I heard David Hoggs bicycle has made it to the Texan border after days of feverish pedaling.

He said he was there for the whole thing but can’t talk because he’s on his way to the scene.

It was som commonplace that they couldn’t be bothered to lock the door.

The interviews were held at a high school where the shooting did not occur. I would think that the sound of gunfire at the elementary school would cause everyone to lock his or her door without having to be told to. The AR-15/5.56 is a very loud gun.

The teachers with the unlocked door(s) are both dead, so we’ll never know why they failed to lock their doors after the first shot was heard. My somewhat educated guess (taught for over 40 years)is that perhaps, with just a couple of days left in the school year they were showing their classes a movie.

Now, the politicians will go on and on about keeping schools safe.

But, all that was necessary was to lock all the doors.

"But, all that was necessary was to lock all the doors."

Simple cost effective solution: Replace all doors with the internal bar to open that we've all seen elsewhere, and a special key to unlock from the outside. I've seen those internal horizontal bars for most of my life. Check out the next store or theater you go to at the exit doors. Sheesh.

Yep. Then no one could walk in freely, but the students could still escape if needed.

On the other hand, sometimes those doors with the bars are left unlocked, too.

Lockdowns because of bomb threats and mayhem threats that used to characterize normal school years hereabouts ceased abruptly and altogether when all our teachers and staff were offered and most took training and concealed carry licenses and that fact was proclaimed on signs at the doors of the schools. Guess which State.

Uvalde is less than 60 miles from the Mexican border.

The perp was shooting of his gun near the school for a reported 12 minutes ere he entered the school.

That's news to me. Every fire escape door in the modern world has those and can't be locked from the inside. It is the basic design and the purpose of those bar handle doors. ESCAPE! It is almost impossible to breach that from the other side.

Yes rifles are quite loud. Ever had someone shoot a .30-06 when you’re close by but have no hearing protection? It’ll blow your ears off.

So why isn’t this being discussed in the news? It is a major piece of this mass shooting puzzle. They can interview just about everyone but I guess these students don’t have anything to say that would be important to this investigation. The Dems and media are in the anti-police business right now and it will become the one factor where they will win the mid-terms.

I’m not sure how it works, but I spent many days for many years in church buildings with those kinds of doors. Some were left unlocked. We could open them and walk in. I don’t know why. Does someone have to lock them?

I still think that idea is the best one, as long as no one can access from outside.

On the other hand, maybe some types of those doors are always locked. We might be talking about different kinds of doors.

>p>You must be talking about something else. The bar handle doors I’m speaking of only open from the inside. Look at any emergency exit.
