Imperial measurements set to be revived in ‘common sense’ move ahead of Platinum JubileeEU law requiring metric units could be repealed, as country takes advantage of Brexit freedoms

Boris Johnson will pave the way for the return of pounds and ounces in British shops this week, in a "common sense" move heralded by Tory MPs as taking advantage of freedoms delivered by Brexit.

On Friday, the Government will publish proposals to repeal EU-derived law requiring metric units to be used for all trade, with only limited exceptions.

At the same time, ministers will issue guidance to firms on restoring the use of the crown symbol on pint glasses, after it was replaced by the CE marking to help the UK conform with EU rules.

A government source said: “We Brits measure our walks in miles and our beer and milk by the pint. And nobody knows what a 4.5kg baby looks like, but we all know a 10-pounder is a whopper.

"It’s time we held our heads high about our long history of traditional measures.

“And what better way to celebrate Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee than restoring the crown emblem back onto the side of pint glasses so that we can toast her health and service to this country.”

Degrees C for weather is one of the stupidest ideas ever. They are way too big.

What is stupid is 32 degrees freezing and 212 degrees boiling. Plus, centigrade temperatures can be broken down into tenths of a degree.

Give me the metric system any day of the week.

I’d rather have it in degrees Kelvin, but Fahrenheit is much more intuitive than Celsius.

You can have it for free.

Funny you should phrase it that way. I have long argued for a metric week of 10 days. This would, of course, require three more days. After Friday would come Reaganday, Trumpday, and Freeperday.

I have already forwarded my common-sense suggestion to the Bureau of Weights and Measures. I expect to hear back from them soon.

The metric system is overall better, but I’m used to the old system.

You can have my part of it.

That's barely 10 miles per gallon. What are you driving? A GMC Suburban or a '72 Impala?

I was in Britain in 2006 during a heat wave. I saw a newspaper headline saying it had reached 100 degrees. Obviously Fahrenheit—more of an impact than giving the temperature in centigrade, I suppose.

“What is stupid is 32 degrees freezing and 212 degrees boiling. Plus, centigrade temperatures can be broken down into tenths of a degree.”

To each his own, of course. But the freezing/boiling point of water (at sea level, of course) doesn’t play that large a role in most of our lives. Negative temperatures in the winter are much more common using Cº than Fº. And, Fahrenheit degrees can also be broken down into tenths of a degree.

The metric system is much easier to convert by simply moving a decimal point left or right—it does have that going for it. But I find the system’s penchant for creating a new unit rather saying what it is, so cycles per second becomes a Hertz. Instead of Newtons per square meter, we get a Pascal. And it has to be Newtons/square meter instead of Kilograms per square meter which everyone in metric world would understand because kilograms measure mass not weight or force.

Imperial units are fundamentally based on humans and the metric system is based on how French intellectuals thought the world was and behaved in the late 18th century.

But as I said, to each his own.

A rod is 16.5 feet and a hogshead is 63 gallons. Forty rods per hogshead works out to just about 0.002 miles per gallon.
