Drug overdoses spike 700% after state decriminalizes drugs

When Oregon voters approved a ballot measure in 2020 to decriminalize hard drugs, they were promised the lives of everyone would be improved and funds would be diverted to addiction recovery centers for which $300 million was allotted.

But after more than one year, the rate of overdoses has spiked, and few offenders have used the treatment centers, DailyMail.com reported.

At a legislative hearing Thursday, Steve Allen, Oregon's behavioral health director, acknowledged a "dramatic" increase in overdoses and overdose deaths statewide. One Republican state lawmaker said that her Southern Oregon community of Grants Pass has suffered a 700% increase in overdoses and a 120% increase in deaths.

Commie lib politicians are just giddy at the stupidity of high “Americans.” Drugs help them get elected.

We should make a deal with Portland and Seattle. They can declare independence. We build a wall around the two cities. Anything goes but there will be stringent border controls. Even Amazon will leave because they are not going to put up with that crap.

Marijuana saved me. I have severe CPTSD and its the only thing I’ve taken that has actually reduced and completely suppressed my triggers. Six months on it and I’m getting better. I was on a lot of medications before trying weed and none of them helped. Cptsd is one of the worst things a person can go through and I would not wish it on my enemy.

Well you do have to admit it is another way of reducing human population. I figure that is the reason Trudeau pushed legalizing Fentanyl and other hard drugs up in Canada.

Do people realize yet that the only freedoms we are going to be allowed are those things that cause us to self destruct? It it kills ya, it is a good thing.

People don’t usually OD on weed. If it helps a sick person, I am for it in that capacity.

Good on you. Don’t let anyone shame you. I know PTSD vets who need this herb. Doesn’t do anything for me so I don’t myself. Some people are just addicts and users but there are some people out there in chronic pain and doctors are handcuffed from helping them or they’d lose their license.

So what? The rest of us are better off without them. Nobody is grabbing people on the street and forcing them to take drugs. They made that choice and if they die, who cares? Millions of drug users in the US function perfectly well, having enough brain power to not become incapacitated. Prohibition, whether it’s booze or narcotics, does not work and cannot work. All it does is corrupt the government and law enforcement at every level.
Legalize the drugs and tax them to pay for the health care issues. Anything else is an unreasonable intrusion on a private matter

Southern Oregon, medford, and grants pass used to be nice areas. Now, it’s best to stay away due to rampant crime,

This policy perfectly typifies the “Four Stages” ideology of the left as presented so cogently by Thomas Sowell:

1. The “crisis.” - rarely an unprecedented situation of a “crisis” level.
2. The “solution.” - Policies to end the “crisis” are advocated by the anointed, who say that these policies will lead to beneficial result A. Critics predict detrimental result Z.
3. The Results.. - The policies are instituted and lead to detrimental result Z.
4. The Response. - leftists unleash a litany of excuses, calling the analysis of the results “simplistic,” blame the results on a variety of other factors, insist that the time frame for analysis isn’t sufficiently long enough, and basically put the burden of proof on the critics to demonstrate to a certainty that these policies alone were the only possible cause of the worsening that occurred.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

Your situation doesn’t describe the orthodox liberaltarian position. There is medical need even for some opioids. That doesn’t mean free use of them by anyone.

I looked up Grants Pass on City-data.com. With a name like that I was picturing a bump in the road on an obscure highway. Found that it has a population of over 35k, pretty healthy population for Oregon. Violent crime rates were below the national average until 2004. They spiked in 2013 and remained high ever since, above the national average every year.
