Russian Escalations in Syria Risk Direct Conflict With U.S., Military Officials Warn
The Wall Street Journal ^ | June 17, 2022 | Gordon Lubold and Michael R. Gordon

Russian forces have conducted a series of operations against the U.S.-led coalition in Syria this month, including one this week at a strategically located base in the southern part of the country, U.S. military officials said.

The Russian actions have alarmed U.S. military officials, who are concerned that a miscalculation might escalate into an unintended conflict between the U.S. and Russian forces in Syria. Tensions between the two countries are already high following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February and American efforts to arm the Ukraine military to defeat Russian forces there.

On Wednesday, Russia carried out airstrikes at the al-Tanf garrison, near Syria’s border with Jordan in southeast Syria, where U.S. troops have a train-and-advise mission with local fighters to prevent a resurgence of Islamic State.

The Russians will get careless and provoke an American response. This would not end well for the Russians. Who knows what will happen after that.

In some circles it is considered patriotic and a civic duty to *not* ask this question (just go with the flow), but what are US backed forces doing in Syria?

Anybody want to talk about NATO "ally" Turkey and their incursions into Syria? Against U.S. back Kurds?

No?

Crickets from the forever-war crowd?

Keeping the “Team America, World Police” role alive. We haven’t blown enough cash.

[The Russians will get careless and provoke an American response. This would not end well for the Russians. Who knows what will happen after that.]

Nothing. KAL007 was shot down. A Congressman was on board. What happened? Nothing. Russian pilots shot down American aircraft over Korea. Russian anti-aircraft crews shot down USAF and USN planes over North Vietnam. Same response. Nada.

Wars don’t happen by accident. A political decision has to be made. Costs and benefits are weighed. In the case of Syria, there is nothing there that is worth general war. So we might take the gloves off in-country, but that’s the extent of it.

When you get down to brass tacks, Russia’s not going conquer the US, and the US is not going to conquer Russia. Heck, I’d expect Biden to backpedal big time in Syria. That’s just how Democrats are. Note that Biden advised Obama not to mount the bin Laden operation.

The USA has no business in Syria. President Trump knew this and got us out. On his first day in office the Derp-in-Chief ordered troops back in.

All so Qatar and Saudi Arabia can have a gas pipeline.

You reap what you sow. They should never have been building bio labs and Ukraine and became especially a priority when the Covid virus got loose. I would shut all them down myself personally, but when they baited the bear and the bear comes after them; well what do you expect.

The Russians are in Syria at the invitation of the Syrian government.

The Americans are in Syria at the invitation of, well, ourselves.

Leave it to the WSJ to make a moral equivalence between the presence of these two countries in Syria.

Four years ago:\
“Last week, the headquarters of a U.S. proxy in Syria—the Syrian Democratic Forces—and their American advisers came under attack by a large Syrian regime force 8 kilometers east of the agreed-upon Euphrates River de-confliction line near Deir al-Zour.
In “self-defense,” the U.S. launched a large-scale artillery and air assault to repel the attackers. Using F-15s, F-22s, AC-130 gunships, Apache helicopters, MQ-9 unmanned drones, and artillery, U.S. forces killed an estimated 100 attackers, according to some Russian media reports, and destroyed numerous tanks and artillery pieces. Among the reported fatalities, according to a Pentagon official, were Syrian Arab Army soldiers enlisted in the “ISIS Hunters” unit, as well as Russian mercenaries working for Wagner, a private military company under the command-and-control of the Russian Ministry of Defense that has been tasked with re-taking oilfields from ISIS.
Initially, Moscow denied any connection. “The reasons for the incident were reconnaissance and search activities by Syrian militia not coordinating with the command of the Russian operations group,” Interfax cited the Russian defense ministry as saying.
But much like the Kremlin’s denial of Russian army soldiers or special operators being deployed in Ukraine, this narrative is rapidly eroding against a tide of social media and even pro-Kremlin press claims naming the names of the slain mercenaries and giving details of their funerals in St. Petersburg.

Are you just itching for a hot war with Russia?

Why in the hell are we in Syria?

This neocon nonsense is insanity.

Al-Tanf is the US terrorist training camp. I would not shed a tear if it disappeared. If anyone has followed the US invasion of Syria, they would be aware of the purpose of Al-Tanf.

We have no business in Syria. We are not the “good guys” there.
