While there is no repetitive analog in history, still, as people being human, situations repeat with the worry that the outcomes will repeat. If we make Putin an analog to Hitler, as an autocrat who must stay successful least his failure gives reason to his overthrow.

In that light, is this Ukraine adventure an analog to; 1) reoccupation of the neutralized Rhineland in 1936, or 2) the 'Anschluss' takeover of Austria in 1938, or the Sudetenland partition of Czechoslovakia that followed the Anschluss of 1938? Each success by Hitler encouraged his further greed to TAKE ADVANTAGE of the weakness of his opponents. Does this same apply to Putin; Georgia in 2008, Crimea in 2014?

Autocrats are not known for internal restraints! They need an external restraint to be applied in an unmistakable action that burns their fingers! We in the 21st Century bemoan the FACT that the Rhineland was NOT opposed except by words! Will those that write history in the 22nd Century look upon this with the same distain?!

Does this same apply Crimea in 2014?

This is a poor case. It's like Mississipi splitting off from the US and joining France and then the US retaking it. Mississippi has been part of the US for a long long time. Crimea has been part of Russia for as long as we have been an independent nation.

So when Turkey invaded Northern Cyprus in 1974, did people express those same fears about Turkey?

The strength of Russia now vs Europe/NATO isn’t remotely close to Germany vs Europe.
If Germany stayed out of Russia, they would have won.
One country against all of Europe...

Russia’s economy and culture is too corrupt to do anything but beat up its smaller neighbors. They even need help to do that. The EU and China are happy to use Russia as a gas station because they know it will never be a peer threat.

If Putin negotiated at this point to simply hold control of the Donbas, the Crimean peninsula and the “bridge” territory to the latter, while allowing the rest of Ukraine to remain under a puppet regime of the Western elites, it would represent substantially less control than he had prior to 2014.

In other words, we can’t say he’s even being aggressive until pushing beyond the borders of Ukraine. So far he is simply trying to take back a portion of what was strategically lost in the 2014 Maidan coup.

Hi.

Off topic somewhat...

Vlad, you should have been in Kyiv and Odessa in the first two weeks. Maybe three tops.

Time for Ivan to go home and work this situation out peacefully.
