Just 5% call abortion top concern

Abortion, the No. 1 concern in today’s media and politics, ranks nearly dead last among areas voters care about as they struggle with paying daily bills, soaring inflation, and interest rate hikes, according to a just-released survey.

While the Supreme Court’s decision overruling the 1973 Roe v. Wade right to abortion has dominated today’s network and cable coverage, the latest McLaughlin & Associates poll said just 5% of voters call it a top concern.

Just below abortion, at 1%, is reviewing the 2020 election, over which the media are also obsessing.

...

By comparison, 54% cited the economy.

“Only 5% said abortion was top issue. That might change a little, but not with people who can’t afford food or gas or rent or medical bills,” said pollster John McLaughlin, referencing the court’s decision today.

He also told Secrets, “This was no surprise. The decision was leaked a while ago. Most states will not change their laws. Biden’s handlers are desperate to change the subject from the imploding economy.”

President Joe Biden said today that he plans to dig into ways to continue the rights under Roe, but John and Jim McLaughlin said their data show it’s a desperation play to recover his base. In their latest survey, just 23% of Democratic primary voters said Biden was their first pick to run in 2024.

“People are focused right now on inflation, gas, cost of living, public safety, and the disintegration of America,” Jim McLaughlin said. “You know you're struggling when 77% of Biden’s primary voters are looking for somebody else.”

And while the media were suggesting that the question of abortion will help drive a bigger Democratic turnout in fall elections, the McLaughlins said it also stands to help Republicans.

In an April survey, they found that 93% agree with this statement: “Every human being represents a life that is precious and has value.”

John McLaughlin said, “If the Republicans stand on principle and defend human life, Americans are on their side.”

The poll seems to be accurate that only 5% rank abortion at the top of their concerns.

I skimmed the news this morning and I got the impression that the PRO-ABORTION activists for the most part did not engage in radical behavior last night.

And my other observation of the protests during the day yesterday was:

Most of the protestors seemed to be in the 20 to 30 age range. Friday is a normal work day. So why weren’t these folks working????? Some of the 20 year old might be college students, but not all of them.

I think of it as an issue with valence, but unimportant in the November elections. Everyone has had 50 years of this controversy and they have rank ordered its importance to them, and have acted on it, or not acted on it, for a long time. It is baked into the base of voters for each party. It will not matter in comparison to the marginal shifts of Hispanics or lower income families squeezed by inflation and energy prices. I am, however, concerned that it stirs the wrong base in Wisconsin and that it could, combined with the wrong GOP nominee, give the miserable Tony Evers a lifeline.

As a matter of fact, the pro-life people were always more concerned about abortion and were inclined to vote on it..
Absorption has been a wining issue for most Republicans.

“I got the impression that the PRO-ABORTION activists for the most part did not engage in radical behavior last night.”

How do you know the well-behaved crowds were pro-abortion protesters, and not pro-life people celebrating?

Both types were out yesterday, both waving signs and chanting. Since I couldn’t always hear the chants or read the signs, and since the news crews were then selective in their coverage, it wasn’t that easy to tell one group from the other.

In general, if they were happy and well behaved, I assumed they were on our side, but I still don’t know how to gauge yesterday’s reaction.

People care a helluva lot more about the economic prospects. That is particularly the case when they realize all overturning Roe vs Wade does is send the issue back to the states.

Really? No radical behavior last night? Perhaps you missed the vandalism outside of Fox News and what took place in Arizona.

Wake up and do some homework.

Tune in to Bannon’s war room right now and he is saying there was no night of rage last night. That is his opening comment.

Compare this to the Floyd riots.

That would be apples to apples.

This was a nothingburger.

Good point. This was even before the leak. Along with race the rats have lived off this issue for years. The ruling will light up the rat base. This will have some impact how much is not known yet.

Waving signs and chanting some dopey mantra accomplishes nothing and is humiliating. But those dorks have no sense of self awareness anyhow.

“This was a nothingburger.”

Yep. In a week nobody will care about Roe.

Because in reality nothing much has changed about abortion. Those who want it can still get it, and even get paid for it, as California, NY, and many corporations are promising.

This is not so much a victory on abortion as a “states right” victory. A small step toward a return to federalism.

And for that 5%, many if not most have it as their “top issue” because the want it banned. Not because they want it protected.
