Far be it for me to assert such, but personally, my take is that the gloves are coming off for the Russians given Putin knows that when Ukraine collapses and the Russians issue their demands, their will be no negotiations, per se, it will be take it as it is or no deal. If you go back to 1932-3, Stalin created a genocide in Ukraine where millions were starved to death and Soviet soldiers closed the borders. Moscow orders were to confiscate Ukrainian grain and ship it to Moscow and other large Russian cities. Russia just recently stole Ukrainian wheat.
After the Soviet revolution Lenin issued his hanging orders to round up dissidents and trouble makers, and publicly hang them. He and Stalin also had people rounded up tortured and the deported far from Ukraine to work camps. Recent war crime and force deportations by Russian troops are reminding Ukrainians of those old atrocities.
There is far too much bad blood for Ukraine to want to stop at anything less than an invasion of Russia and creation of a "no man's" land on former Russian soil. Yes we are headed for a Judgment Day in Ukraine, but it will be because Russians did not understand the festering wounds they opened.
Russian nuclear threats have become tiresome and tedious. If they really had the capacity to use nukes I doubt they’d be so cavalier with their threats.
So either they’re playing a bluff and their nuclear capacity is diminished from the 2017 Mayak disaster or else they’re idiots who are risking all out nuclear war over something that isn’t even theirs.

When Russia suffers another civil war and collapse like what happened in WWI, Ukraine will agree that Crimea is an independent country with a military alliance with Ukraine and NATO to keep the Russians out. That’s all of the face saving the Russia will be permitted.
