And then there was the book All the President’s Men by Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, the two Washington Post reporters who’d supposedly brought Nixon down. When it came out in 1974, I read it avidly. And two years later I was enthralled by the movie version, written by William Goldman and directed by Alan J. Pakula.
But there was one thing - in the book and the movie - that always puzzled me.
I’ll describe it as it’s presented in the film. Woodward (Robert Redford) meets late at night in a parking garage with his secret source, known as Deep Throat (Hal Holbrook), who drops a bombshell. The Watergate cover-up, he says, wasn’t really about the June 17, 1972, break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate complex. Its actual purpose was to protect a whole raft of covert operations that involved “the entire U.S. intelligence community - the FBI, CIA, Justice.”

William Goldman was a great screenwriter. I hope he didn’t contribute to the lie.
Knock me down with a feather. I was at college at the time. This was really upper east coast establishment - Alger Hiss was one of THEM - vs the uncouth California interloper who hated turncoat upper east coast establishment types of the commie traitor kind.

I have been saying for years, Watergate was a Media coup that deposed a duly elected President of the United States.
Same coup that killed Kennedy and attacked Trump. I say it’s their turn to suffer horrible things.
Woodward ONLY goes after GOP presidents and gets a hard on, doing it. If he were around Lincoln and Ike’s time, he would have invented garbage just to sell his books.

I heard that Nixon left because they were threatening his family if he did not.
He was and would have continued to be a great President.
Read the book, it was Dean more than anyone else and I believe that.

Sometimes, a person can be so convincing in the telling of a lie and in the reactions to other people’s reaction, the liar becomes trapped into continuing that pretense. The pros of deception appear to outweigh the cons.
Other times, the lie can be badly told and performed, but it depicts what a certain group really, really wishes was the truth. They, just for sake of their own conceit may decide to keep the lie going as is.
I would not be surprised if that were true.

Yes, she was a Call Girl herself and number was in a little address book of other call girls and such in the DNC office which is what Dean wanted in the first place.
Woodward was in the Navy before he joined WAPO, he was a briefer for the Joint Chiefs and was a liaison to the NSC. He had plenty of contacts in the CIA and the DIA.
