I don’t know the law, but I suspect that a good case could be made that he is a government official. I have read articles where congressmen were referred to as government officials.
If so, it becomes a federal case and the feds are notorious for vicious prosecutions.

I looked into the background of the suspect who allegedly tried to stab Republican governor hopeful @leezeldin. David Jakubnosis was once a private in the Army & was at Fort Bragg in NC in 2018. His social media is mostly locked down & I’ve been unable to find anything recent.
