Germany used to be energy independent for electricity generation. But they didn't like the look of these surface coal mining pits. So they sold their souls for Russian gas instead.

In November of 1944, an uncle of mine saw heavy fighting not far from the pits and generating station near Weisweiler. I think that complex was already back up and running before he made it back to the US.

Oh, those efficient Germans...
