Couple Arrested After Allegedly Beating Snorkeler Swimming Near Marathon Home

A Florida Keys couple was arrested this weekend after allegedly attacking and beating a snorkeler following a dispute over how close he was to their home.
Paulo De Oliveira, 65, and his wife Katia, 61, were arrested Sunday and charged with both aggravated battery and simple battery.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office said deputies were called to the couple's Marathon home around 1:30 p.m. regarding the incident. The victim, a 36-year-old man from St. Petersburg, told deputies he was snorkeling close to the dock of the couple home when an argument began.
He said the couple beat him with a pole and fishing rod, causing him to bleed profusely from his head.

My wife and I were in Marathon for two days recently.
It’s a quite small town.
Odd to see something that makes headlines from there.

There’s a great little fresh fish and lime pie place right there next to the dock. Mrs. was happy enough to buy one of their T-shirts. It didn’t hurt that one of the fishermen gave us a couple of chunks of his fresh dolphin fish, called mahi-mahi by the correct crowd. Nothing like good sashimi right off the dock. The couple from Chicago even allowed their 6 year old a taste after we ate some. I’m sure it gave him a good story, even if he was rather indifferent to it.

what were they so upset about?
Thefts of traps and other fishing equipment are a problem in the canals. Heck, thefts of traps set within sight are common even in daylight. Miamians get blamed, just as they figure in undersized lobster 🦞 arrests.
