Will fracking make a comeback in Germany in face of gas crunch?
Deutsche Welle ^ | August 18, 2022 | By Stuart Braun

As the Ukraine war continues, Germany is scrambling to reduce its dependence on Russian gas. Could fracked gas, long taboo in the country, creep into the energy mix?

Temperatures might be soaring across Germany but staying warm this winter without Russian gas — which until the start of the Ukraine war supplied over 50% of annual demand — is already a pressing concern.

Plans to make up the shortfall, if Russian supplies run dry, are already in place: Higher liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports, restarting dormant coal plants, and even delaying the nuclear power phaseout.

But most surprising is talk of exploiting domestic shale gas deposits through fracking, a practice banned in Germany and in a number of European countries due to its potential environmental and climate impacts.

Yet members of Germany's coalition government want fracking to be reconsidered as a potential solution to the coming gas crunch.

Europe's largest economy banned shale gas fracking at home in 2017.

The ban, which was due to be reviewed in 2021 but remains in place, extends to deep-lying "unconventional" shale gas deposits that can only be extracted through hydraulic fracturing.

“...restarting dormant coal plants,...”

They’d better get those done quickly, as it takes quite a while.

Let's be real...When the US administration changes, Germany will once again deal with Russia...and buy their gas....via Nordstream...bypassing Ukraine who has been making a killing by charging Germany and the EU fees for passing through their pipelines.

Wake me up when Germany starts fracking. They have a 10 year supply of frackable natural gas beneath their feet. Yet, they cling to their 100% renewable fantasy as they head towards gas shortages and freezing in the winter.

“When the US administration changes, Germany will once again deal with Russia...and buy their gas....via Nordstream...bypassing Ukraine”

Agree, and it’s important to note that Germany has not done ONE THING to disable or destroy Nordstream 2. They’re simply waiting for a US government that allows them to get back to working with the Russians.

Now, if they do take out Nordstream 2, then I’ll retract my statement.

An excellent observation. One also notes the "European" new way of thinking which has declared coal and nuclear as "green," so to speak. The comments in this thread are so apt.

"Red" and Green, as political parties in the Bundestag can withstand much, but not a nation without adequate heating in winter, nor adequate energy to supply not only German industry but also the Deustche Bundesbahn and so much more.

One thing the Putin Special Military Operation and the sanctions against it has done:

Broke the back of Euro-greenies.

Germans thinking about it: (Hmmm... Save Mother Erf on questionable future outcomes or freeze to death this winter?)

Ja! Start Drilling!

I don’t think it broke them at all, it just drove them into hiding. As soon as society can afford the overhead they represent, they’ll be back again, singing the same old song.

Environmentalism is a luxury; a consequence of societal wealth, and the decadence that comes with it.

“… fracking, a practice banned in Germany and in a number of European countries due to its potential environmental and climate impacts.”

Not even the Obama EPA could find any problems that happened from fracking. Not that they did try. The stuff that come out of the hole (not that goes in) have some really bad stuff that ends in “ene”, but there were no real problems.

Beneath the German’s façade of science and culture and engineering beats the heart of a tree-worshipping pagan.

This fact revealed itself in the last century when they put their juggernaut industrial might at the service of their primitive savagery.

UK also banned fracking. Yorkshire has a mother load of natural gas waiting to be recovered.

The German plight is simply the watershed of electing communists to high office, which in turn appoint fellow travelers to important government regulatory positions. Communists hate capitalism because it creates widespread wealth and prosperity, while communism produces only misery for everyone except the party elite.

I disagree.

One of the primary pillars of Green thought and propaganda is not how things are now (mainly, just weather) but the future.

So every dire prediction is about what’s going to happen in the future and how awful it will be.

Meanwhile, people are suffering from no energy NOW (and into the winter)...

This has a profound effect on people.

As time goes on without the dire predictions becoming true the blindfold slips a little more. Now we are finding about just how hoodwinked the “science” (more politicians masking as scientists) made us.

I think millions, as they learn, will reject political science, as more and more info on Covid comes out, and those lessons will begin to affect thoughts on globull warming scare tactics, too.
