Toyota Exec Says Lack Of Consumer Demand Makes U.S. Goal Of 50% Electric Vehicles By 2030 A Long Shot

It’s unlikely mass adoption of Battery Electric Vehicles will develop as fast as environmentalists, the U.S. government, and most of the U.S. auto industry seem to expect.

That’s because, fundamentally, consumer demand just isn’t sufficient, says Jack Hollis, executive vice president of sales at Toyota Motor North America.

In turn, consumer demand isn’t sufficient because on average, BEVs cost too much, and because the infrastructure isn’t ready, like for recharging batteries away from home, Hollis said, in a recent webinar hosted by the Detroit-based Automotive Press Association.

“I don’t think the market is ready. I don’t think the infrastructure is ready. And even if you were ready to purchase one, and if you could afford it … they’re still too high,” Hollis says.

According to Kelly Blue Book, sales of BEVs in the first half of 2022 were 370,726, including estimates for some brands, an increase of 75.7% vs. a year ago.

Lack of demand? Does this guy think we live in some kind of free market?

I fear that the government is going to command that the “consumers” “demand” them.

We in the ruling class don’t care. “Consent of the governed” is a quaint relic. We’ll mandate them, and make it painful if you don’t comply. It doesn’t matter that the grid can’t sustain the demand. Electric cars, windmills and choo choos are to cool not to just force them down your throat because they seem like good ideas to us.

The U.S. automakers are pushing EVs because they figure their best strategy for staying in business is to sell overpriced cars with a bunch of UAW-made powertrain components replaced by batteries produced with non-union labor.

Most Japanese and Korean companies don’t have to deal with that issue.

Here’s the deal. I’ve got a 2017 Ram 1500 with the 5.7 Hemi. I can put 20 gallons of 87 octane regular in it in under 3 minutes and that will get me about 400 miles down the road, give or take. So, someone build an EV truck that I can get 400 miles of charge in under 3 minutes and at the same price as a Ram 1500 and then I might consider it. Otherwise, it’s a high priced, virtue signaling grocery getter.

“I don’t think the market is ready. I don’t think the infrastructure is ready. And even if you were ready to purchase one, and if you could afford it … they’re still too high,” Hollis says.”

I predict Hollis will be out of a job in a few weeks. You can’t go against the narrative like that.

I think the EV pickups will be in high demand by the brokeback cowboys, pimps and Hollywood elite.

Screw that. New car dealers here are marking up all vehicles, not just EV's, by at least $20,000 over the sticker price. EVen the lowest base models. The mark-up is not advertised.

They can demand all they want, but they can kiss my azz and ESAD

Who would have guessed most people don’t want EVs. The Prous has been around since the early 2000’s with even more hybrid/EV models in recent years.

As a example in 2021 Chevy sold 106k Tahoes, not known for being a budget-friendly or great on gas vehicle but only 24k Bolt EVs. The tech isn’t ready yet. I can fill my gas SUV in in 5 minutes at the local gas station, but need a app to find the nearest charger, hope you don’t have to wait hours in line to get a spot, then 30-60 minutes for a charge.

You can’t beat the ease of maintenance, quick refueling, ability to refuel from a 5 gallon gas can if needed, etc of gas cars.

They somehow jack up gas price after election to the point where an ev is meaningful

Please stop with the common-sense, cost benefit analysis, or I will report you to the forum moderator or worse.

Just wait until they tax the hell out of gasoline, and ICE vehicles, and won’t allow you to take out a loan to buy an ICE car.
