Developed by Google and Capgemini, the AI software learned how to spot pools on aerial images of nine French departments during a trial run last year, which were then cross-checked with land registry databases.
According to the Parisien newspaper, which reported the results of the AI test, an average pool of 30 square metres (320 square feet) would be taxed at 200 euros ($200) a year.
In the nine test departments, the software detected more than 20,000 pools, which led to the collection of some 10 million euros in tax revenue last year.
The DGFiP public finances authority said the programme would now be rolled out nationwide, potentially leading to 40 million euros in new levies in 2023.

Finding swimming pools is just the first step.
According to the article: “It could also eventually be used to find undeclared home extensions, patios or gazebos, which are also used to factor property taxes, the authority said.”
And this test is over, the system will be deployed France-wide next year.
And you know the IRS will do the same thing, they have all those new agents.
Taxman
By the Beatles
Let me tell you how it will be
There’s one for you, nineteen for me
‘Cause I’m the taxman
Yeah, I’m the taxman
Should five percent appear too small
Be thankful I don’t take it all
‘Cause I’m the taxman
Yeah, I’m the taxman
I’ll tax the street
(If you try to sit, sit) I’ll tax your seat
(If you get too cold, cold) I’ll tax the heat
(If you take a walk, walk) I’ll tax your feet
(Taxman)
‘Cause I’m the taxman
Yeah, I’m the taxman
Don’t ask me what I want it for
(Ah, ah, Mr. Wilson)
If you don’t want to pay some more
(Ah, ah, Mr. Heath)
‘Cause I’m the taxman
Yeah, I’m the taxman
Now my advice for those who die (taxman)
Declare the pennies on your eyes (taxman)
‘Cause I’m the taxman
Yeah, I’m the taxman
And you’re working for no one but me (taxman)
This is really old news.
Local govts here in US have used aerial photography for decades as part of tax assessment.
My buddy’s little plane made him some dough doing this.
US taxing and property appraising agencies have been using Google Earth since it came out to find property improvements.
Prior to Google, it was aerial and satellite photography of that county that was used.
i see a biz opportunity for camo pool covers ...
Camouflage pool covers!
I walked into the US Census bureau one time as a consultant around the 2010 time frame. I was shocked at the level of sophistication and imagining they have for EVERY Property. This has been in the works for a long timeโฆ
“And you know the IRS will do the same thing, they have all those new agents.”
IRS does not assess property taxes.
From 2 years ago and Gotham...
No, but assessments are being moved away from local control in NYS.
Deep State has a mad-on for local control.
The large insurance companies also use this sort of tech for damage estimates after weather events. Wouldn’t be surprised if they come back and examine satellite or drone photos for verification of repairs, etc. Simple enough to do. It’s all pretty automated these days.
It's like when travel guide books become bestsellers because they reveal all of the "hidden gems".
The next thing you know, nobody goes there because it's always too crowded.
Yes human interpreted aerial surveillance has been around for a while. This uses AI software to interpret the aerial surveillance.
They will take this further and further and squeeze everything they can out of people.
“The large insurance companies also use this sort of tech for damage estimates after weather events.”
After the last big hurricane in Panama City they had the aerial photographs online fairly quickly.
Check all of the boxes that have swimming pools...
Actually I think it’ll be sport ... camouflage and computer tricks...
“They will take this further and further and squeeze everything they can out of people.”
OTOH, catching the “cheaters” makes for a fairer system.
