Well, it’s too early to say for sure how this counteroffensive will turn out… it’s the first day and the Ukrainians are saying it’s currently conducting “shaping” operations. Maybe but it’s clear already that the Ukrainians conduct offensive operations very differently from the way the Russians have conducted theirs. The Russians relentlessly pound their objectives with artillery until the defenders are weak and demoralized and only then attack on the ground. That way there is minimum loss of Russian lives and limbs but a huge loss of Ukrainian defenders. The Ukrainians apparently are conducting their ground assault after only minimum artillery softening up. The result is that the Ukrainian grunts suffer huge, UNNECESSARY losses and apparently the Ukrainian leadership is OK with that. The Ukrainian “leadership” needs to remember that loyalty is a two-way street. The grunts will remember their treatment.
Offensive ops always carry the risk of huge loses.
The Germans held off huge forces with numbers way out of wack during WW2. Am still amazed they did not collapse completely way sooner.
The Ukrainians can not afford to loose men and equipment now.

No, that’s just Plan C. The Russians do because that’s all their corrupt and incompetent army is capable of. They do that after Plan A: Shock and awe and Plan B: wide encirclement failed.

Ukraine has NATO equipment in reserve. 500 HIMARS systems, etc. 10,000+ troops trained in NATO countries. Does Russia? The long game always favors the home team. Putin has done all he can and will try to consolidate what he has stolen.

Oh BTW..ten thousand troops are about ten battalions. Not all are front line troops although they might need all of them for front line duty.

This one sounds like a land-war version of something like the Marianas Turkey Shoot, hohos apparently just tried to charge across open pastures like the charge of the darkness brigade and got slaughtered.
After the Special Military Operation is concluded, the surviving Ukie cannon fodder are gonna want pieces of The Piano Playa.
Reconstitution and training new forces is virtually impossible for UKR right now. Hopefully, that’s obvious to everyone. They should have gone strictly guerilla months ago. Afghans have taught this lesson multiple times.
I just hope all of this business comes to a final end a week or two prior to the november elections.
