JACKSON HOLE, Wyoming (AP) — When Diane Swonk first attended the Federal Reserve’s annual economic conference in Jackson Hole in the late 1990s, there was a happy hour for women who attended the event. It barely filled a single table.
Now, the “Women at Jackson Hole” happy hour draws dozens of female economists and high-level decision-makers, from the United States and overseas.
“I’m just glad that now there’s a line for the ladies’ room,” said Swonk, a longtime Fed watcher who is chief economist for the accounting giant KPMG.
It’s not just at Jackson Hole but also in the Fed’s boardroom where its leadership has become its most diverse ever. There are more female, Black and openly gay officials contributing to the central bank’s interest-rate decisions than at any time in its 109-year history. Many are also far less wealthy than the officials they have replaced.
Over time, economists say, a wider range of voices will deepen the Fed’s perspective as it weighs the consequences of raising or lowering rates. It may also help diversify a profession that historically hasn’t been seen as particularly welcoming to women and minorities.
“Broadly, that’s helpful,” said William English, a former senior economist at the Fed who teaches at the Yale School of Management. “There’s evidence that diverse groups make better decisions.”

well, I feel better... /s
glad they mentioned this
plenty of blame to go around
Light reflectivity, plumbing, and who you like to f*** up against worst inflation in 40 years.
I don’t like our chances. Sell.
As if this is a good thing in and of itself.
IDGAF Just lower inflation and especially stop printing money!
That might explain why the FED is so confused and lacks a clear path in governing the economy. More diverse input does not always give clear leadership.
Yeah, we are screwed. I do not care a wick about diverse leadership. Competent leadership would be much better.
how many black lesbian immigrants?
jean-pierre is asking
btw based on diversity inclusion and equity plus intersectionality
black lesbians will rule the world
with a few transgenders thrown in for flavor
I honestly thought this was a Bee article.
BFD
No wonder the economy is going down the *******
Good grief.
Is that why inflation is currently at 40 year highs?
That is not “tackling”. That is slacking.
Even so I am an optimist by nature I have some serious doubt as I have a feeling the US is heading down the same path as Argentina where poor politics, corruption and graft has gotten the best of them and this cycle is not easily broken, as it is part of a mind set which took years to develop. The chains of habit are too weak to be felt until they become too strong to be broken!
For curiosity’s sake the current rate of inflation in Argentina is around 70 % and shows no sign of abating, in other words they have not gotten their act together yet and neither has the US.
Even if we elect a president who may have the right ideas for attempting to get this country back onto the right track it only may slow the descent on to the trash heap of history of a once great country. So far there has been no known great country in history which has escaped this cycle.
I don’t know if I should read the rest of this article, I don’t want to hurl. Yes, perfect logic, only diversity will cure inflation. We should drive them even more nuts. Why stop at singular races? Aren’t there mixed races? Where are the people who are 1/10000th Cherokee with 1/18th Hispanic, and 1/1000th Aboriginal mixtures? Why are they being represented? Lets protest this!
“Broadly, that’s helpful,” said William English,”
Sexist! Off with his ‘ead!
Things ran a lot better when the white guys were in charge.
Diversity will be the death of us. It has become more revered than
the Bible in the religion of the Communists.
Good economists, make way for diverse economists.
Just wait until there are 6-ft-tall, broad-shouldered "ladies" with 6 o'clock shadows waiting in that line!
Only then will it be truly "diverse!"
Regards,
The Fed has been wrong about pretty much everything since Volcker left in 1987. About when “diversity”/affirmative action started?
