I’ve long maintained that the three greatest inventions/developments of the twentieth century were air conditioning, Novocain and rock and roll. Life without these would be a whole lot worse for me. And that’s what matters. To me.

Waterborne ships and the navigational skills to go to where you wanted go, and the ability to come home to your home port.

Even the Old Kingdom Egyptians had that.

Fossil fuel energy and specifically Natural Gas which made energy cheap, enabled the mass production of fertilizer, energy intensive industries possible, and enabled the population of the world to quadruple since 1940-1950

Nitrocellulose in 1845 by Christian Friedrich Schönbein

Guncotton was the first nitrogenated hydrocarbon high explosive and the father of all smokeless powders and high explosives. Nuclear weapons cannot be triggered without high explosives.

Nitrocellulose is the basis of celluloid which enabled roll photographic film, motion pictures, etc.

Celluloid is the first plastic used for things like billiard balls. Modern electronics is impossible without plastic insulators.
