The pace of fighting is intensifying as the war in Ukraine stretches into its seventh month, with Ukraine seeking to exploit Russian weaknesses in the south and Moscow signaling that it might reinforce its troops in the east to renew its stalled campaign.
Ukraine’s military has imposed sweeping restrictions on journalists as its forces mount a counteroffensive to retake territory seized by Russia in the south of the country. The Russians have leaped into the void, trying to characterize the counteroffensive — one week in — as a failure, without providing evidence to support the claims.
“The Russian presentation of an immediate Ukrainian failure due to a lack of constant Ukrainian claims of territorial gains is a deliberate obfuscation of reality,” the Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based think tank, said in an analysis on Friday. Complex counteroffensives cannot be resolved in a matter of days, the analysts wrote, and visual evidence indicated that Ukraine continued to pound Russian supply lines and logistical hubs.
The Ukrainian offensive is focused on isolating and attacking deeply entrenched Russian forces west of the Dnipro River.
The British military’s defense intelligence agency said Saturday that the Ukrainian offensive operations, focusing on three axes, likely “achieved a degree of tactical surprise; exploiting poor logistics, administration and leadership in the Russian armed forces.”

It’s going to take awhile for the Ukrainians to retake Kherson. Weeks at a minimum, more likely months.

Yeah, they’re going to have to dig them out, block by block, street by street, and house by house. That the Putinistas somehow expected a single one-day or one-week battle for the city is just ignorance. The Battle of the Bulge went on for 6 weeks, Stalingrad for 9 months, and Verdun for 11 months, among many others!
