Hermit ascetics are a post-Constantinian Christian “thing”.
Looking at his place, I am not sure he is an ascetic. Since he had his head covered, I suspect the fellow may well be Jewish himself.
John the Baptist was a pre-Constantinian and the Jews of his time respected the time he spent living an ascetic life alone in the wild.

John the Baptist had a unique place in salvation history...last and greatest of the Prophets.
But you’re right...he looks as though he has been eating far more than locusts and wild honey and that is definitely NOT a camel’s hair garment!
