Ukraine's President Zelensky said he has "good news", claiming the recapture of several settlements from Russia.
Rumours have swirled for days about a possible breakthrough in the eastern Kharkiv region, but with no word from Ukrainian officials.
Mr Zelensky declined to name which places had been retaken, saying that "now is not the time to name" them.
Separately, US officials said Ukraine was making "slow but meaningful progress" against Russian forces.
Speaking in his nightly video address to Ukrainians, President Zelensky said there was "good news" about the rumoured success of Ukrainian troops.
"I think every citizen feels proud of our soldiers," he said, naming specific military units and applauding their bravery in combat.
But he said: "Now is not the time to name the settlements to which the Ukrainian flag returns."
Ukraine has tightened its operational security in recent weeks, sharing few details about a widely expected counter-offensive in the east and south.
Ukrainian soldiers have launched an offensive south-east of Kharkiv, towards the eastern region of Donetsk, over which Russia has maintained substantial military control since the war began six months ago.
Some reports suggest Ukrainian forces may be a few dozen kilometres from the city of Izyum, an important link in Russia's military supply chain.

Zlnsky has to say that or the military ammo and revenue stops. But he never “shows” what he;s recaotured aside from planitng a flag on top of a hospital. Show us the evidence!

Maybe Ukraine wouldn’t have considered joining NATO had Russia not invaded and annexed Crimea.
In other news, Zelensky unleashed the flying saucer fleet to lead his people to their glorious victory...

Shinzo Abe was quite the hypocrite.
He was willing to sell out Ukraine in order to get Putin to give the Kurile Islands back to Japan.
Other Japanese are intent to reclaim the Kuriles and the portion of Sakhalin Island that belongs to Japan.
Now with Abe dead and Putin weak perhaps someday soon we will see the Rising Sun flying over Karafuto again.
More than 3,000 Ukrainians have died by now in the Kherson offensive without having made any significant progress. Hundreds of tanks and armored vehicles were lost. A dozen Ukrainian planes and helicopters have been shot down. All the material had come from the 'west' which has now emptied its stock of Soviet weapons. No more will be coming anytime soon.
The Ukraine thereby blew its chance to hold a line against any significant new moves from the Russia side. Those moves will be coming.
That's it! The war's over!
No “significant progress”?
Why that comedian Zelensky managed to “capture” one or two small villages. He will use that in his next TV comedy appearance.

Russia would ave never needed to annex Crimea if the Obama Administration didn’t pull of a coup in Ukraine in 2014.
