If you do go up against a polar bear with a .22 pistol, make sure the front sight is filed off...

In polar bear country, somebody needs at least a 44 magnum or a 10 mm - and preferably a decent rifle. To hike in the Svalbard region requires a pistol, rifle, or shotgun. IIRC, the pistol generally has to be at least a .44 magnum (although a .41 magnum with loads the equivalent of a .44 magnum can qualify) and the carrier has to meet some proficiency requirements. I agree on the rifle. If I were hiking there, I would carry my .45-70 carbine with Buffalo Bore bear loads but I'd have a pistol, too (and it would NOT be a .22).
