Vladimir Putin has taken to comparing himself to some of his czarist predecessors, invoking their military triumphs. In June, he praised Peter the Great for “taking back and reinforcing” territory in the Baltics in the Great Northern War in the 18th century.
But as Putin’s effort to conquer parts of Ukraine slogs into its sixth month, some historians feel he more closely resembles Nicholas II, whose 1904-1905 war against Japan was an unmitigated disaster.
The parallels between the two conflicts are undeniable. Just as Nicholas underestimated his Japanese adversary, so did Putin, who was convinced that his invasion of Ukraine would be a walkover.
Just as Nicholas suffered embarrassing naval defeats, so has Putin, including, most dramatically, the destruction and sinking of the flagship of Russia’s Black Sea fleet.
And just as Russia’s atrocity-ridden performance in the Russo-Japanese War cast a pall over Nicholas’s rule and hurt the Kremlin’s international standing, the Ukraine war has badly damaged Russia’s and Putin’s reputations.

Newflash: The Russian Navy just took out a lot of the power infrastructure in Ukraine with Kaliber missiles. This starts a really bad winter for Ukraine. We are clearly determined to fight to the last Ukrainian civilian to destroy the Russian Federation.
The only bravado and hubris I been seeing is that of those pro-Ukrainian junkies that have just inundated FR with incessant articles over the past near 48 hours......
Translation: unable to win using conventional military means, Russia resorts to terrorism by creating civilian humanitarian disasters. I’m sure some maternity hospitals are next on their target list.
So to summarize the first three posts:
1) Russia is a might military force, winter will be bad, and we are evil for either helping them or else maybe for not sending our soldiers to fight with or for them.
2) The currently not traded Russian rubble has had it fixed price set at a level that would indicate a strong Russian economy if it were actually being actively traded.
3) Reporting current news and being happy that the Ukrainians are being successful is annoying.
Are you familiar with the Allied fire bombing of Dresden in WWII? Nearly a quarter of a million innocent civilian deaths. And, yes, maternity wards were hit by us, the USA. War is a horror no matter which side.
Yup, and led to WW 1 with Nicholas’ “Cher cousin Willie.” This is not similar to theRusso/Japan war.
Is Russia losing, or is the Russian aim to destabilize and deplete Europe.
And to deplete the US?
The propaganda has been heavy since the opening shot.
“And to deplete the US?”
I don’t think that argument is valid.
If the weapons were built with the intention of being used on Russian (or even Soviet) targets then they are fulfilling their purpose. Sure the US has fewer of them, but the US needs fewer of then because the targets are already destroyed. Both sides can build more, but the US and the West can build more faster, especially now.
The NWO wins again. Hurray for the Washington Post. More billions for Ukraine. Great place. Russia sucks. Zeig Heil Biden. Every single day here. On and on...
Indeed and agreed, Sir.
It seems more like the Ukrainians are willing to fight to the last Russian soldier inside Ukraine.
Like the Ukrainians, if I have to choose between drag shows and a Russian boot up my bum, then Ru Paul it is.
Well, the army side kept the japanese abay in Pt. Arthur (and the Japanese made numerous mistakes themselves in the process as well).
Where the Russians f*cked up royally was sending their Western fleet east and, after blowing up some fishing vessels in the process, not only failed to de-fowl their hulls, but then sent light messages to each other because they couldn’t service the German-made morse radios on their ships. Because of this, the were also unable to hear the Japanese morse radios ablaze telling each other that Tokyo knew where they were and was sending ships to attack.
Because of this the Japanese navy scored a massive win and funding over the Japanese army, who were seen as the political losers.
The historical analogy Putin has to really worry about is 1917, where the collapse of the Russian army led to revolution. Maybe a second October Revolution this year, although that would probably produce an even more rabidly nationalist government is Moscow.
Russia will always push against it’s neighbors. Eastern Europe needs the nuclear option.
So far, Putin has not called for a full mobilization. So young boys from Moscow and St. Petersburg are not fighting in the war in Ukraine.
Don’t care. Not my monkeys, not my circus.
Just stop spending my grandkid’s money in shiitehole countries via Forever Wars!!!
Trump would be against this crap.
That's a rare issue I would disagree with him on. No way I would allow Putin to slaughter the lives of innocent Ukrainians.
