Lived in the area for 20 years. My home was about 3 miles from the epicenter of the 1989 Loma Prieta Quake. Now that was a quake!(6.9):

It wouldn’t be preceded by a large quake. It would be followed by a larger quake ( sometimes)

Or not. Lots of areas have small earthquakes often enough that the pressure necessary for a big one never accumulates.
