Who doesnt love and fondly remember the smell of moldy canvas on a GP Medium Tent you get to errect and sleep in for the next 3 weeks after 18 months of very warm storage? Really takes me back to my boot camp days at Ft. Knox.

Plenty of money for illegals, ukraine, student loan forgiveness, green handouts, fake vaccines and more but not enough to take care of the troops and their facilities.
Perfect.

I am a retired Msgt. In 1980, as a Tsgt, I went to Germany. It was the first time I had been around large numbers of Army troops, about 18,000 Army and about 2,000 Air Force. I went to a week long new comers class, put on by the Army, but open to the Air Force too. These guys took me to eat at the Army dining hall, twice. It was the worst food I ever had. It was awful. Then I saw their barracks. It was the worst I ever saw. Utterly appalling. Then I saw how they talked to each other. At first I thought it was a joke, but then I realized, they really do yell and scream at each other, all the time. I thought, no way would I ever let anyone talk to me like that. No wonder the Army can’t keep people in. Their living conditions were just horrible. Prison inmates have better housing and food. Even the 1st MOB out of Lindsey had better housing, when they were out in the field.
I wrote a letter to the Stars and Stripes, about it. They printed it. The editor’s note, said the Army’s priority, was not in housing. I thought, that was an understatement of Biblical proportions.
Our USAF barracks were better than the Army, but I thought it was still substandard. After 20 years, I had all I was going to take, and retired at the earliest moment. I told my son, don’t even think about doing ANY enlisted time. He took my advice, and is a commissioned officer. He loves to fly.

Thanks for your service, and that of your son. I ended up outranking my dad, but he started out as an Air Force E1 private in 1950 (before there were airmen),
Went to agitation l cadet training, backseat radio operator training, NAV training and pilot training and was therefore entitled to three sets of Air Force wings. He retired as a light colonel fighter pilot, so I’m pretty sure he outranked me…

Cleaning and maintenance used to be the role of the lower enlisted ranks, E2s & E3s. When I served in the Navy, cleanliness of quarters, gear and person were stressed heavily in boot camp. When you weren’t training or in classes you were cleaning something. Even the mess hall $hitcans had to be scrubbed sparkling.
On shipboard “Sweepers, man your brooms” was a twice-a-day call over the 1MC. Has something changed?

Too bad, but at least soldiers now use correct pronouns.

Thank you for your service as well. My son outranked me, on his first day as a 2nd Lieutenant, but that was because I told him I didn’t want him to do any enlisted time, so he wouldn’t have to deal with the same BS that I did. When he was young, I always took him to the museum at Travis, and up in the tower, so he could see the C-5s, C-17s and KC-10s flying. He decided he wanted to be a USAF pilot. He originally wanted to fly a C-130J. He didn’t get that, but he IS flying something else. 🤪😆👍
