Terrible. The torture described included having ones’ toenails pulled off with pliers, and for no apparent reason except that the guards could do this and not get in trouble for it.

What could be the mindset of such a prison guard? What, other than a sadistic pleasure in having power over another individual. The brain usually needs to be conditioned before such action becomes an acceptable choice.

Basketball bouncer Brittany should be thankful for her minor celebrity status in America. That likely saves her from such treatment at this stage of her imprisonment.

A heart do instead by evil, possibly even possessed by the evil one himself, but I’m more inclined to thi k their hearts were just given over to their own evil natures.

—”The brain usually needs to be conditioned before such action becomes an acceptable choice.”

This is a conditioned response accepted and well known in Russian services.
Probably starts in the schools?
Russian fraternity hazing must be “interesting”?

Russian army hazing:

Dedovshchina (Russian: дедовщина, IPA: [dʲɪdɐˈfɕːinə]; lit. reign of grandfathers) is the informal practice of hazing and abuse of junior conscripts historically in the Soviet Armed Forces and today in the Russian armed forces, Internal Troops, and to a much lesser extent FSB, Border Guards, as well as the military forces of certain former Soviet Republics. It consists of brutalization by more senior conscripts, NCOs, and officers.

Dedovshchina encompasses a variety of subordinating and humiliating activities undertaken by the junior ranks, from doing the chores of the senior ranks, to violent and sometimes deadly physical and psychological abuse, not unlike an extremely vicious form of bullying or torture, including sexual torture and anal rape.[1] When not leaving the army seriously injured, conscripts can suffer serious mental trauma for their lifetime.[citation needed] It is often cited by former military personnel as a major source of poor morale.

I would suggest watching Kieslowski's 1979 "From a night porter's point of view"

This was made in 1979 in communist Poland but gives you an idea of how things were behind the Iron curtain and indeed in Putin's Russia today

Namely - petty men were brutalized by the system until they have no hope, no goals, no nothing. They then take glory in the little "power" they have

We can see it in the USA in the DMV or the TSA - petty people with desperate lives with no hope, no goals, nothing, but they have a little "power" and they use it in sadistic ways

But in the case of Putin's Russia or the USSR, these "petty tyrants" get more abilities to be horrific.
