They were both shelling and murdering each other. Civil wars are hell, especially when Russia is the one stirring them up for the purpose of a pretext to intervene, as Putin did in Crimea and Georgia, and were doing in Donetsk. Banderas has a statue, sure. So does Chmelnicki. Should some anti-fas come over and tear them down? Mostly, though, the Ukies are reacting to a threat from Putin, and the Russians are reacting to the Ukies’ reaction, and so it escalates. Banderas would never have agreed to a Jewish President, let alone to one running on a platform of making peace in Donetsk and cracking down on corruption. He was reacting to mass starvation, collectivisation, and the supposed role of “the Jooos!” to both calamities in his primitive little mind. Putin didn’t “intervene” because of anything other than that high gas prices made it doable.
