White sharks, more commonly known as great white sharks, have new protections as Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law Assembly Bill 2109 on Monday, September 19.
Sponsored by Assembly member Steve Bennett, AB 2109 passed the California legislature with an overwhelming majority of support. The bill aims to get ahead of activities that could lead to increased interactions between white sharks and humans. As well as to give law enforcement more tools to protect white sharks from international efforts to catch or attract them and to protect the public from interactions with white sharks that have been unintentionally hooked by fishermen.
“This bill represents a collaborative engagement between anglers, the scientific community, the legislature, and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to develop proactive, common-sense approaches to further protect California’s iconic white sharks, while also protecting ocean users and preserving recreational fishing opportunities,” said CDFW Director Charlton H. Bonham.
Anglers should be aware of the new rules that go into effect on January 1, 2023. They can be found in California Fish and Game Code, section 5517. They prohibit the use of shark bait, shark lures, or shark chum to attract a white shark.

Anglers also may not place those items into the water within one nautical mile of any shoreline, pier, or jetty, when a shark is visible or known to be present.
The CDFW continues to work with partners to proactively address the potential for fishing activities to lead to white shark interactions.

California loves white sharks, but not white people.
Is this code for protecting criminal aliens?
Why not eat them?
Happy to see California legislators spend their time on such important matters. Mr. Tomas Butterfield would be so proud!

that’s where surfers like to surf.
So, is a surfboard, or a surfer’s foot or hand a shark bait item?
There is so much we can learn from Great White Sharks.
Their work on Faster Than Light travel is amazing.
A whole article about a shark without the obligatory “global warming” or “people of color hardest hit.”. I am impressed
When I first read the headline I assumed it ended with, “than babies in the womb”.
Gavin is the enemy of surfers. He wants less surfers and more sharks

Common sense is at a very low ebb in California...the sea lions increasing population, shark food, will negate anything they try.

LOL !!!
The only thing I want to learn from a great white shark..
.
.. is how long it takes one to chomp down Gavin Newsome and digest him into another form of crap, ..
.
... if it is in fact possible for one to stomach digesting that particular piece of commie grifter crap.

All Sharks Matter
Sounds like White Shark privilege to me...
It's interesting that apex predators always take the point of view of other apex predators. Great White Sharks are at the top of their food chain and have no worries other than overpopulation.
Territorial waters only extend 12 nautical miles offshore. Calzilla wants that and 200 more, despite Fedzilla never giving up anything. Who will win? Easy, who can print more money?
.
Short Answer: Because they really don't taste very good.
But in all honesty I've only eaten dusky shark - not great white.
But oily foul taste - yuck.
Do you want to eat something that itself eats ANYTHING?
The biggest & most dangerous white shark in California is NEWSOM.
Boggles the mind!
In recent years, Orcas have been encroaching on traditional White shark hunting grounds off of South Africa and have been seen (and recorded) hunting the sharks. Interestingly, the Orcas tear out the shark's liver and let the rest of the carcass go.
