UK: Labour suspends MP who described chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng as 'superficially' black

MP Rupa Huq has been suspended from the Labour Party after she was heard describing the chancellor, Kwasi Kwarteng, as "superficially" black.

Criticism came flooding in from senior Labour politicians such as Angela Rayner and David Lammy. The comments were revealed via audio which was published online.

In the audio, Ms Huq can be heard discussing Mr Kwarteng's educational background at an elite school, where she mentions that "you wouldn't know he is black" when listening to him on the radio. The comments were believed to have been made at a fringe event at the Labour conference in Liverpool on Monday.

Ms Huq has now apologised for the comments she made following her suspension. She said: I have today contacted Kwasi Kwarteng to offer my sincere and heartfelt apologies for the comments I made at yesterday’s Labour conference fringe meeting. My comments were ill-judged and I wholeheartedly apologise to anyone affected.”

It is believed that Ms Huq has been administratively suspended from the party, and has lost the party whip. A party spokesman said: “We obviously condemn the remarks she made, they are totally inappropriate and we would call on her to apologise and withdraw them.”

It comes shortly after Sir Keir delivered his keynote speech to delegates at the conference. During the speech, he argued that now is a "Labour moment" for the party to provide leadership to the nation.

During the audio, Ms Huq can be heard saying: "Superficially he is a black man. He went to Eton, I think, he went to a very expensive prep school, all the way through, the top schools in the country. If you hear him on the Today programme, you wouldn’t know he is black.”

Tory party chairman wrote a letter to Sir Keir regarding the audio, which was published by the Guido Fawkes website, noting that he has "serious concerns". He wrote: “I trust you will join me in unequivocally condemning these comments as nothing less than racist and that the Labour whip be withdrawn from Rupa Huq as a consequence."

Meanwhile, Ms Rayner told BBC Politics Live: “She should apologise for those comments. For me those comments are completely unacceptable.

“I think Rupa needs to reflect on what she has said and she needs to take immediate action.” Ms Rayned added that if Ms Huq fails to apologise: "Well that’s a whipping matter, what they do regarding the whip. But I’m pretty certain that the whip will see that and say that’s not acceptable.

“I’m sure that Rupa will recognise that’s not acceptable, I’ve known Rupa a very long time and I don’t think those comments are appropriate.”

Shadow foreign secretary David Lammy added: “I wouldn’t have made them myself and clearly I hope Rupa apologises and retracts them, frankly.”

Kwarteng was born in the London Borough of Waltham Forest on 26 May 1975, the only child of Alfred K. Kwarteng and Charlotte Boaitey-Kwarteng, who had emigrated from Ghana as students in the 1960s. His mother is a barrister and his father an economist in the Commonwealth Secretariat.

After starting school at a state primary school, Kwarteng attended Colet Court, an independent preparatory school in London, where he won the Harrow History Prize in 1988. Kwarteng then went to Eton College, where he was a King's Scholar and was awarded the Newcastle Scholarship prize. He read classics and history at Trinity College, Cambridge, achieving a first and twice winning the Browne Medal.

That was from wikipedia.

Mr. Kwarteng is a highly educated, erudite and intelligent man. That doesn't gel with what the left wants from black people

Immigrants in England... The legal immigrants that is and their children... Tend to support the Conservative party more than the Labour (or leftist party). That’s because they are hardworking, law abiding citizens who immigrated through the legal means available to citizens of the commonwealth and former members of the commonwealth nations.

The labour party is nothing but a bunch of lazy white layabouts who prefer the nanny welfare state and a free cheque.

By “superficially” black, Ms Huq means a black who has escaped the socialist plantation.
The MSM and all the forces of the left are massing to pin the blame for this winter’s financial collpse onto Mr Kwarteng’s tax cuts. (Nothing to do with sanctions, wars, and fifty years of failed socialist economics).

here are SOME of the folks in Truss' cabinet

We already see Kwasi is eminently suitable to be Chancellor - I've read his books and he knows economics. He isn't the "token black person" - rather he is the right person for the job

Deputy PM - Therese Coffey - has served as work and pensions secretary for three years, has a PhD in chemistry, and worked previously for Mars.

Cleverley, the foreign affairs minister - Cleverly then trained in the army, but his training was cut short by a leg injury in 1989. He went on to gain a bachelor's degree in Hospitality Management from the Polytechnic of West London.

On 6 October 1991, Cleverly was commissioned into the Territorial Army, as a second lieutenant -- he is now a lt. colonel

After graduating, he worked for the publishing company Verenigde Nederlandse Uitgeverijen; he joined Informa as international sales manager in 2002. Two years later, Cleverly joined Crimson Publishing as advertising manager. He became online commercial manager for Caspian Publishing in 2006. The following year, he co-founded web publishing company Point and Fire, turning over £550.91 in 2008

None of these people are "tokens" - as the left wants.

You wouldn't know he was black by listening to him? Yikes! Does that mean that black people can't speak the Queen's English properly?

And his parents were from Ghana? That would would make him more "black" than many people in Britain.

Leave it to the inventors of English to say “superficially” (6 syllables) instead of the American English version, “not really” (3 syllables).

Unfortunately, these days the ‘inventors of English’ usually pronounce it with only 4.
