As for deterrence theory, he clearly has not read Thomas Schelling's great book "Arms and Influence."
Then he would understand the problem. Russia has vital geopolitical interests in stopping the expansion of the "Anglo-Saxon" "rules based" globohomo order. That order has quite publicly stated that the dismemberment of the Russian Federation is their goal and pushing Ukraine is their strategy. The US has no vital interests at stake. Their position as head of a grand coalition of parasites looking for their scraps falling off the table as the US goes rampaging and war mongering around the world is not in any sense a "vital interest."
Nuclear deterrence is not about bullying the other side with nuclear weapons into giving up his vital interests. It is understand that nuclear weapons are a tool to help avoid unforeseen shocks to the strategic balance - like an out of control expansionist Soviet Union with visions of global dominance abandoned to the US after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Our NWO warmongering globalists grew up in a world where they thought nukes didn't matter, getting rid of them was part of a universally accepted global policy, and expanding US dominated "liberal democracy" at gun point around the world could proceed without any credible and reasonable opposition.
Well, we ran smack into a heavily armed bear crawling out of his cave and just a pit sore and snarly about what has been going on, a China who has resented the British and US treatment of China and Japanese treatment of China for a while our enemy and now our ally in this rules based global order. And China is arming up. Oh and now we have Norks shooting stuff off again too.
The thing the idiot Bolton forgot in all of this is that you don't try to talk someone with nuclear weapons out of something that he things is his by threatening him with nukes.

What annoys me most is the sheer arrogance of neocons. The thought that medieval like Afghanistan would become some oupost of DC elitism and magically morph into California in the Hindu Kush by force. Now they think Russia needs the same treatment. Ok,vl they could shock and awe Russia and be lucky and not get turned into ashes. Then what? Put a puppet government in power and occupy. We are talking bout a country 2 and 1/2 times the size of the U.S. And when the body count rises and frozen body bags pile up and still the Russians don’t ‘see the light’. What then.
Shock and awe works both ways when the other side has more ICBMs than you do, and has a gazillion intermediate range nukes that are not under treaty, and you gave up and disassembled while they build more.
