that threatens to cut off annexed peninsula from Putin's reinforcements A huge explosion has hit the only bridge between Crimea and Russia, a crucial supply line for Putin's forces Footage shows the blast following the rail bridge engulfed in flames and the road bridge next to it collapsed

The cause of the explosion is not known but Ukraine has been targeting Russian logistics in recent weeks Footage appears to show a truck exploding on the road section of the bridge as sabotage is suspected

A crucial bridge linking Russia and Ukraine has caught fire in a spectacular explosion in a suspected attack by Ukraine as the country cuts of supplies to Russian forces.

A train carrying fuel erupted in flames on the crossing, built by Vladimir Putin as a key link to the territory he invaded in 2014.

The only bridge between Crimea and the Russian mainland has been vital to the Russian military for supplying Putin's war in Ukraine.

Ukraine has previously threatened to target the bridge and has been damaging Russian logistics in recent weeks.

Footage of the incident appear to show a truck exploding on the road section of the bridge as it drives towards Kerch in Crimea.

It was unclear if this may have been a suicide bomb in a truck but there have been no reports of incoming missiles. Some witnesses claimed there were two explosions .

A voice on one video is heard saying: 'It seems to me there were two explosions, no? -- If it was a missile, it would hit the second [rail] bridge too in any case.'

There were suggestions Putin may address the nation on the bridge explosion amid fears he will unleash havoc on Ukraine.

He has already hinted he could use nuclear weapons in the war with Ukraine.

Very. According to this article a truck was seen and filmed exploding, so it does appear that was the probable cause.

Only question is how did the saboteurs get out before the explosion??

How about launching an invasion from Belarus with the intention of assassinating Ukraine’s government leaders and replacing them with Putin groupies? You know the one, the Ukrainians defeated it.

A third and final point: this is a massive influence operation win for Ukraine. Even if they didn’t do it, it is a demonstration to Russians, and the rest of the world, that Russia’s military cannot protect any of the provinces it recently annexed.

Because it is not a desired outcome?
Could be a host of reasons why or why not.
Not for me to tell.
I am like anyone else, I just read and watch what is occurring real time.

My theory is Ukies get a brave man with terminal illness to drive the (suicide) truck bomb. Ukies control, have the remote detonation for this bomb... The ill truck driver has a secondary detonation button in case of a remote controlled failure.

Ukie command remotely controlled the precise moment of detonation. Because you cannot trust a nervous volunteer driver.

Missed is the importance of the incident

The route through Crimea is the primary remaining route for the military logistics efforts to supply the troops in the south. The Russians are now isolated from resupply

Did they get the other lane, too?

Also, in before the first “this is a Hollywood production” post, claiming this is from Arnold’s “True Lies”.

Why would they do it?

It slows down logistical support for Russia in Ukraine AND for the Russian Navy.

It also sends a huge message to the world the Russia is losing.

All wars are won with logistics. This is a big blow to Russian logistics.

Chechens will break away 5 minutes after they hear Putin is dead. Which will be soon. The far Eastern stans don’t need or like Moscow. I see a YouTube Russian dissident commenter in Uzbekistan who is very happy there.

You know, a GPS-triggered hidden bomb on a tank car or truck would be a heck of a way to do something like this.

Sure beats a timer and guessing that Ivan will not stop to pee/drink vodka.

Or they jump into the water with their wet suits and go swim over to some guys in a rubber dingy (or whatever).

Or there was a GPS-tiggered bomb planted that the driver didn’t even know about. Or it was on the train somewhere.

This is an obvious military target for the Ukranians. I don’t think this is much of a conspiracy as the oil pipeline.

As good as HIMARS are, their explosive payload is not large enough for concrete bridges. You need a truck bomb to do this at Kerch. To collapse 2-3 spans. And this is how it was done. A truck laden with C4 / Semtex whatever, compact effective explosives.

The driver was a Ukrainian or Russian with terminal illness.

They could have sabotaged the engine on the train or killed the engineer and put on the brake. Or the engineer was the the saboteur and jumped off the bridge to some waiting buddies.

Or there were two GPS bombs. Or whatever.

There’s a 1001 ways to do this.

Exactly right. Why anyone would jump to “cancer patient suicide bomber” is beyond me. Why go to all that trouble? It’s stupid.

I’d have used 2 four man teams. 2 trucks and 2 get away cars. Pack the trucks full of Kaboom, park them at separate points on the bridge, stop in the middle, and take off in the cars.

Timer or remote detonation and, voilà, Crimea is now cut off from both sides. Bonus points if you can take out the rail line, which they may have done.

The problem with the truck theory is there’s no hole in the tarmac. You can’t collapse a road bridge like that from a topside explosion.

The pillars were taken out, from the underside.

As a former artillery officers, HIMARS are not subtle, either.

You would know they were the weapon, especially in a quiet area. Long plume of smoke, fire, etc.

Hitting a moving truck on a bridge going 60mph without laser guidance/spotter would be a heck of a lucky shot.

On the other side of the argument, the precision warhead has a 91kg (about 200lbs) warhead. Coming in fast, a typical cluster could easily do this damage. (We didn’t typically fire one, but 2-3 or 5. With a critical target like this bridge, we’d have opened up.)

I believe there are guard shacks on either end of the bridge, so I would think they’d have to jump/climb/repel off, somewhere.

Might not be here, might be much closer to shore, but somewhere.
