Much was different about Russia in the 90s. American tourists flooded the country. US aid was underway to help their agriculture programs. Those days are gone forever now.
I think the Russians are going to have to confront Putin. And his successor might be like Gorbachev or Yeltsin. They're reasonable guys. So Russia will attempt to rebuild their bridges with the West.
But they will have a difficult time getting any trust from the West. And for good reason.
