Rail union rejects Biden-brokered labor deal, raising prospect of a strike
Axios ^ | 10/10/2022 | Emily Peck

A union representing nearly 12,000 railroad workers on Monday voted down the tentative contract agreement between freight railroad companies and all 12 of their unions brokered by the White House last month.

Why it matters: The rejection, by the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division of the Teamsters (BMWED), raises the prospect once again of a nationwide rail strike.

Huh.

I recall a buttload of so-called journalists repeating the Democrat party line that Joe fixed this problem.

All over the media that next morning...

This morning, I tune in and see/hear nothing.

Mods, I clearly screwed the format up.

Proper headline if you could fix:

Every company I worked for including the military did not sick people working. Making bad decisions and spreading the illness.
So why is the railroads so stingy on sick leave?
Do Y’all want a pilot puking his guts out flying the plane,
probably not.
Why would you want an engineer driving 100’s of thousands of tons of freight when he is schiffing his pants from a flu?
Any bobdy here know?

it’s logical that unions representing employees in critical industries play brinksmanship to secure pay and benefit increases, with the economy in shambles and inflation running rampant, if you are a union why not demand pay increases to keep up with inflation.

They were offered something like a 20% pay increase. This has to do with sick leave and such

Preppers ping. I trust everyone is ready for the continued supply chain disruptions.

There’s nothing wrong with acting in your own self interest.
Too many here are subservient to corporations.
If you leave a company, you’re supposed to give at least two weeks.
If they decide to let you go, security immediately walks you out.
Corporations no longer have allegiance to their workers, so why should workers have allegiance to said corporations?

Hate to say it.......... but Trump would of made sure the workers were taken care of with no strike..... but Joe, the Leader of the Workers Party could really just give two ********* for the workers.....

A major bargaining concern by the unions is working on two man teams with limited hours (40). Currently one man is expected to work 60 hr weeks alone.
The deal offered by the White House was authored by owners, primary constituents of the Dems. It did nothing of any significance for employees. It was a stop gap measure intended to get the issue past the mid terms. It probably will work unless the Unions call a strike in the next 2 weeks.

I 100% agree, I’ve never been in a union, but as an IT Worker, I’ve been subject to every form of layoff you can imagine.

Back in the mid-80s when the company I was working went thru several major layoffs, I watched grown men with children walk out of the building after being told they were getting laid off, crying like babies, I swore to always have a plan B.

I suspect it’s even more than that, I’ve read one of the major issues that’s not being talked about is one of automation, rail companies are implementing technology to eliminate as many people as possible from being required to operate a train safely, up to and including the engineers.

I’ve been IBEW and non union in the exact same position.
There are pros and cons to both.
When I was in the union, the relationship between union and management was the most dysfunctional I have ever been party to. But, management couldn’t get away with trying you to do work beyond 40 hours without paying and my accepting OT.
Storms were mandatory OT, but you made bank.

Seriously, what are the primary goods transported by train, as opposed to trucks? I know Tropicana orange juice moves by train from FL.
