They meant to deface it, but it was under glass. Even if it wasn’t, Tomato Soup is water-based, so cannot penetrate an oil painting.

Just what I was thinking. Campbells tomato soup is SO watered down now that we stopped buying it. Tastes like sugar water. We buy Mom’s brand. But that glass over the painting, thank goodness.

Good point, but I wonder if an oil painting that is a few hundred years old is going to hold up as well as one that is freshly painted. There are going to be plenty of microscopic cracks that water can seep through.

There is typically oil such as soybean oil or canola oil in canned soups. Have ever witnessed how greasy it is when you clean dishes that touched it?
