Sheriff Annoyed That People Are 3D Printing Guns to Sell to State Buyback Programs

An upstate New York sheriff is irked that people around the US are 3D printing firearms to turn into gun buyback programs for cold, hard cash.

"I know in Utica, New York, Houston, Texas, and Spartanburg, South Carolina that 3D printed guns were submitted to the gun buyback program," Robert Swenszkowski, the sheriff of New York's Oneida County and, strangely, a professor at Utica University, told Spectrum News 1.

He appeared to be referring to several stories that emerged this summer, in which people in Texas, South Carolina and New York did indeed sell back guns they 3D printed at home to local authorities as part of state gun buyback programs. One man, who identified himself only as "Kem," admitted that he 3D printed more than 100 guns to turn into New York State's gun buyback program. He was awarded $21,000 for his efforts, which was paid out to him in $500 gift cards.

I’ve seen some modern weapons 3d printed on creality enders that I would have zero concerns using and I am talkign about glock/ar/ak/mp5 clones that are fully functional

This tech has advanced dramatically over the last couple years

this is just one example

It only happens because the sheriff is too stupid to be sheriff.

Gun “buybacks” are stupid.

They also make stealing guns more attractive because the ground rules say “No questions asked”.

I don’t know much about 3-D printing. Can you explain to me how a plastic gun can fire a bullet? All I can think of is the Clint Eastwood/John Malkovich movie where he makes a plastic gun. I wasn’t aware that a plastic barrel would contain the pressure from a fired round of ammunition. Do they print parts in plastic and then put a metal barrel in it? Just curious how this is done.

Some of them use available “non firearm” parts, some are using metal (people are figuring out how to rifle metal barrels with chemicals, and some are printing with extremely high end filaments

Google printed and 100% printed, chemical rifling, etc it’s very interesting

3D printing is getting popular! My 12-year-old son is printing 3D for the model railroad of ours. He made 40 cars (for a NASCAR race scene), some figures (including a wheelchair race - he is in a wheelchair, and the figures for model railroading never had kids in wheelchair.). He is still learning how to 3D print.

Well, they don’t care where they got them.

If confiscated, it just saved them the effort.

I agree with your take on it.
