Went through Checkpoint Charlie about 60 years ago this month (WOW! I must be getting older) with my Mom on a tour. As a 15 year old it didn’t take more than a few seconds to understand the evil that was in place. Guess what I see now right here in the U.S................... Same evil intent. I still have a map (now laminated) of Berlin showing the barbed wire and dividing walls layed out across and around the city.
I asked him “do they ever wave back?” His reply...”are you serious?”
A professor when I was in college went to the DDR several times and took lots of slide photos. He loved the place and favorably compared it to the BDR, He hated consumerism and capitalist advertising and made no bones about East Germany being a ‘morally superior’ nation. It was a dictatorship whose goals were to create better people not ‘mindless consumers’ of unneeded junk. He particularly pointed out the almost complete lack of open sexuality in advertising and movies. To him it was proof of the depraved nature of capitalistic consumerism. Capitalism corrupts everything in its pursuit of profit was his bottom line. Even the most intimate of human relations are manipulated to produce vicious, soulless human beings only interested in perverted sex and greed.
