Taliban confirm first floggings since supreme leader's edict

Kabul (AFP) – Three women and 11 men were flogged Wednesday on the orders of an Afghan court after they were found guilty of theft and "moral crimes", a provincial official said.

The lashings are the first to be confirmed since the Taliban's supreme leader ordered judges this month to fully enforce Islamic law, or sharia, saying corporal punishment was obligatory for certain crimes.

Qazi Rafiullah Samim, head of information and culture for Logar province, told AFP the lashings were not administered publicly.

"Fourteen people were given discretionary punishment, of which 11 were men and three were women," he said,

"The maximum number of lashes for anyone was 39."

Supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada ordered judges this month to fully enforce aspects of Islamic law that include public executions, stonings and floggings, and the amputation of limbs for thieves.

Taliban 2.0?

The media told us they had changed.

100% Joe Biden’s responsibility for letting this happen.

Remember the female reporter actually asking the Taliban leaders if they’d changed their views on women’s rights?

I think the GOP could use a few floggings after what they did to the midterm electoons (sic).

Heathens. Leave the country however you can. On foot, by donkey, just get the hell out.

It pains me to say it, but I’m not blaming Biden much here. Sure, he completely botched the withdrawal. However, the Afghan debacle is 95% on George W. Bush. He’s the guy that set the tone originally. Obama, Trump, and now Biden are just bit players.

It’s kinda like the Vietnam debacle. LBJ set the tone. Nixon and Ford were just bit players.

The sage advice of George Washington to avoid costly foreign entanglements with bizarre alien cultures has been ignored to the detriment of the American nation and its people.

Any war worth fighting is worth winning decisively with the least amount of treasure and blood spilled on our side.

We should of just leveled their cities from 500 miles away, and if we weren’t willing to do that, then we had no business fighting the war to begin with.

“100% Joe Biden’s responsibility for letting this happen.”

No, it isn’t. The idea that Afghanistan is a true nation that could be westernized is laughable.
It’s a tribal dump and it always will be.
We should have carpet bombed the whole country, and salted the poppy fields.
Nation building there was/is a fool’s errand.

That was good advice, especially when combined with MacArthur’s warning to never fight a land war in Asia. It is a great tragedy that LBJ and George W. Bush were both too egotistical to listen.

“Afghan court after they were found guilty of theft and “moral crimes”, a provincial official said.”

How retrograde!!

Compare that to the civilized US where you can steal $900 multiple times a day and skate free.

Absolutely true. Some wise person (I forget who) once said that democracies should go to war reluctantly, and then fight fiercely. The United States seems to be doing the opposite. We go to war almost casually. And then we fight half-heartedly.

It is a receipt for disaster.

Trump understood all this. He kept us out of wars. Peace through strength, as the saying goes. Maybe that was one reason he was pushed aside.

Instead the party is rewarding its “leaders” by retaining them. Face it, the GOP is never going to change.
