WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — New Zealand on Tuesday passed into law a unique plan to phase out tobacco smoking by imposing a lifetime ban on young people buying cigarettes.
The law states that tobacco can’t ever be sold to anybody born on or after Jan. 1, 2009.
It means the minimum age for buying cigarettes will keep going up and up. In theory, somebody trying to buy a pack of cigarettes 50 years from now would need ID to show they were at least 63 years old.
But health authorities hope smoking will fade away well before then. They have a stated goal of making New Zealand smoke-free by 2025.
The new law also reduces the number of retailers allowed to sell tobacco from about 6,000 to 600 and decreases the amount of nicotine allowed in tobacco that is smoked.

Are they doing the same for Vape? Seems like a worthwhile effort, though I’m sure a lot of people won’t like the idea.
That reminds me of my youth in Connecticut. The drinking age had been 18, but the state was raising it one year each August 1, until it was changed to 21. I made it under the limbo stick, but my friends didn’t.
Laws were made to be broken IMHO.

Don’t think this will be enforceable. Most retailers in the US only ever “card” people that look very young. If they had to card everyone, they just wouldn’t bother I think.
Gee. That ought to take care of those youths on the Left that never grow up.
Most young people just vape instead, and I don’t think this law says anything about that. Not that they could stop it anyway, since you can just order all the vaping materials you want via the internet.

50 years from now, if not sooner, all payments will be electronic. Automatic tracking of ages.
Such a pretty country. Such an ugly government.
But they make you a criminal, so it matters. Not being able to have a smoke without looking over your shoulder is ridiculous.

If one wanted to find a way to get youth to start smoking it would be hard to find a better one than this.
They’ll only be selling marijuana in state-run shop by then.
My Auntie used to send me up the bait shop to by her a pack of Tareyton cigarettes every day during the summer. I was 6ish. They always had strawberry Charleston Chew’s too so I was happy to go. :)
