A good friend of mine is an ER nurse. She has told me the same thing. She also told me one patient told her that the tops of the doors and fixtures around the room needed dusting.
The Catholic Church teaches a doctrine called the Communion of the Saints. The souls of the dead are alive and conscious in Heaven as they await the bodily resurrection. They even pray for us.
How else do you explain Revelation 6:9-11.

My late best friend (of 25 or so years) passed, and had no idea. He came to me one night, and I had to tell him. Then, he came to me later to tell me “that he’d made it”.
