Could be true - he might have shot a family member who was in the service. A purple heart requires being shot by the enemy, and Joey B is certainly an enemy (foreign, or domestic) of the United States.
I have read that she was holding the baby in her arms while stopped at the sign. Decide for yourself why that would be. It is known that she did pull out in front of a loaded semi truck and trailer.
I suspect that “taking away everything Joe loved” could have been on her mind when she hit the gas.
