Millennials and Gen Z are blaming Putin for intensifying Russia’s baby shortfall: ‘It’s pretty bad for us’

Growing up in St. Petersburg, Dasha, a 29-year-old marketer and artist, dreamed of having a “complete family.” Raised by her mother and grandmother, her father left when she was in elementary school.

”I grew up thinking that I would be married and have a family of my own before I turned 25,” she told Fortune.

But Russia’s political instability and financial uncertainties have recently led her to renounce having kids. In Dasha’s lifetime, Russian President Vladimir Putin has invaded Ukraine twice; the war’s consequences have taken a heavy toll on everyday Russians like her. Life in Russia has become “too complex,” she says, with money worries coupled with fears over an increasingly autocratic government.

Dasha is just one of many young Russians whose stance toward having children is indicative of the economic and political anxieties facing the country today. Fortune chose not to publish the full names of the people interviewed due to concerns of government reprisals.

Since the Soviet Union’s collapse in 1991, Russia has confronted a continued population slump due to low birth rates coupled with high mortality rates. Throughout his rule, Russian President Vladimir Putin has obsessed over Russia’s shrinking population. Last year, Putin encouraged Russians to build a “strong family [with] two, three, or four children. [This] should be the image of a future Russia.” This August, he revived the Soviet-era “Mother Heroine” award, which pays $16,000 to women who have 10 or more children.

Obviously. Who would voluntarily sign up to be a single mom in Russia?

It’s not like they treat war widows any better than their soldiers.

Babies or no babies is the result of sex or no sex.

Considering the confusion governments have been instigating in children, it's no wonder they don't have normal sex that makes babies.

Western propaganda trying to paper over how the culture of narcissistic self-extermination is an export from the Western world into Russia. While Russia has suffered from low birthrate for decades following the loss of confidence in communism, the failure to recover even decades later is tied to the inroads of Western culture where spiraling depopulation is a major issue.

If you compare the population drop from the Black Death, or the most genocidal invasions in history (such as the Muslim conquest of northern India), to modern Western birthrates, they are similar. Then break out the dissident sub-populations such as Amish/Mennonite, unassimilated immigrants and so forth, and the bulk of Western populations show as being in even worse shape. The culture of self-extermination is generally speaking more extreme than the worst plagues and hostile invasions in history. Putin is right to obsess about defeating the culture and worldview the Western elites are trying to force on Russia.

Not going so well over here either. Probably for largely the same reasons.

The transexualism does not fly in Russia, but emigrating and abandoning your starter family did until about 2014.

The real problem is a ton of 15-35 year olds grew up without fathers wealth or care because russian males 1993-2013 with any sort of skillset moved to the west, “became polish or germans by second marriage” for a EU work permit, leaving a starter family in the Russians welfare state were unless tied to the political system or the energy industry being poor is a female thing.

The best and brightest have been leaving Russia for a long time. The war increased the rate. Russias GDP is less than Texas and Russia has 5 times the population
The Russian women want out. A failed country getting worse.

I think I see the problem, she pursued a career. Well, she got it

Can't blame her. Russia is a third world country outside St. Petersburg and Moscow.

But sadly, they don't look to the West for its liberty, but as place with better stuff to buy from their Instaslut Influencer and Only Fans earnings.

They ought to be blaming the Soviets. I’m hardly Mr. Environmentalism, but what the Soviets did to the land over there is monstrous. You don’t believe it until you see it firsthand...

Now I’m confused. I thought all Russian women under 40 moved to the US to work for the Government, military contractors or tech companies and now spy for China.

It won’t be long (a couple generations or so) before Russia’s muslim population reaches majority status.
